"Cortachy or Quartachie, may be derived from the Gaelic word "qhuartaich", which signifies enclosed or surrounded. The name is descriptive of the parish in reference to the Church and Castle, as they are situated in a small valley surrounded by rising grounds. The origin of the name Clova, anciently written Clovay, is unknown. Cortachy & Clova at one time separe [separate] parishes were united in 1608. The parish is bounded on the north by the parish of Glenmuck, Tulloch & Glengairden: on the north-west by the parish of Crathie & Braemar in Aberdeenshire; and Kirriemuir (Northern division): on the East by the parishes of Lethnot & Navar, Lochlee and Tannadice: and on the South by the parishes of Kingoldrum & Kirriemuir (Southern division)
