"The name of this parish occurs in ancient documents in the various forms of Errolly, Eroly, Iroly, Airlie, the last of which has been revived by the present Earl, in preference to the modern spelling, Airly. The etymology is uncertain. It has been suggested that the name may have been originally Airdly, from the Gaelic Aird, which is used to denote the extremity of a ridge, particularly where it terminates abruptly, and which is exactly descriptive of the locality of Airlie Castle. The parish is situated in the western part of the county, & borders upon Perthshire. It is bounded on the north by the parishes of Lintrathen & Kingoldrum; on the east, by Kirriemuir & Glamis; on the south, by Essie & Meigle; and on the west, by Alyth & Ruthven. Part of the line of boundary is formed by the River Isla & its tributaries the Melgam & Dean. The Southern part of the parish lies in the bottom or "howe" of Strathmore, from which it gradually rises in a series of undulating parallel ridges, forming a portion of

An oblong plain built mansion erected on the ground flat or foundation of the more ancient Castle which was burned down by the Marquis of Argyll in 1640. at the east end, the old tower still is entire and in good repair with an entrance through it to the front of the mansion extending from the tower southerly is a very strong wall about 4 storreys high and 10 feet thick.
"The old castle of Airlie occupied a commanding position on the rocky promontory formed by the confluence of the Melgum and the Isla. From the natural advantage of the situation, & the massive strength of the building, it must have been almost, if not entirely, impregnable before the introduction of Artillery. In its original state, it exhibited the form of an oblong quadrangle, occupying the whole summit of the promontory, with the exception of a small space at the extremity which is traditionally said to have been used for exercising horses; some remains of the northern part of the castle on the ^ and most accessible side, with portcullis entry still remains nearly in its original state: The wall has been sufficiently repaired to remedy and prevent the injuries of time, but without impairing its antique character. The fosse also is still distinct, but has been partially filled up, to render the place accessible to carriages."

"Airlie Castle which gave title to Ogilvy Earl of Airlie, is situated in the N.W. [North West] corner of the parish at the conflux of the Melgin and Isla. It is built on a promontory, formed by these two rivers and elevated above their bed more than 100 feet. It has been a very large and strong fortress, seemingly inaccessible

on every side but the south, on which it had been secured by a ditch and drain more than 20, perhaps 30 feet wide, and a wall (the front of the Castle) 10 feet thick and 35 feet high. At what time it was built, is not so certain, as that it was destroyed by the Marquis of Argyll in 1640, which was repaired in kind by the Marquis of Montrose and the Royalists a few years afterwards. Till within these 3 years it has remained a ruin; but now an elegant modern house, built on the principal foundations of the Castle, is just finishing"

Close to the side of a Stone wall or fence on the farm of Barns, is a small hollow pointed out by Mr Lowdon as being the site of an ancient cave.
"Two Caverns formed within dry Knolls which probably served as retreats to the Ancient inhabitants in time of danger, have been discovered in this parish: one about ½ way between the Castle and the Kirkton. The other about a mile to the south (this one cannot be pointed out). They seem to have been from 4 to 6 feet in width, 20 to 30 in length and 6 feet in height, and were constructed with dry stone walls on the sides, & roofed over with very large long stones with a covering of earth. The entrance had been concealed by thickets of Broom. The stone covers which are of red sandstone have been obtained near the spot, but evidently quarried with considerable care and labour"

This name applies to an arable field a short distance west of the mansion of Lindertis. All the authorities with the exception of William Duncan can give no traditional story about it, farther than authenticating the name of the field. Being induced by Captain Munro to call on one of his brother's tenants named William Duncan who remembers when he was a boy, of his Grandfather John Duncan narrating something about the Kirkshed of Lindertis, he had lived to be a very old man and was a stone dyker in this locality, and when trenching the stones for the dykes enclosing the field "Kirkshed" he and his men had come across the foundation of what they considered to be the chapel of Baikie, and in several places of the field, stones were thrown up bearing marks of having been cemented with mortar or lime. The place where the foundation was razed cannot be pointed out. Also in reference to the hamlet called St Maddens, William Duncan says that his Grandfather remembered of the village being entire and there were in it A Merchant and a Shoemaker's shop also a public house. This hamlet is now entirely swept away with the exception of a ruin which is to be also razed this winter by Mr. Fleming the present tenant of Cantsmiln, see ruin on trace having St. Maddens well on it. William Duncan also informs me that

A small portion of an old road raised about 1½ feet above the level of the adjacent ground. It is what the Authorities here quoted say is the only remains of the Roman road which had led from a Camp at Cardean to the Camp at Battledykes.
"Some remains of the great Roman Road which ran east from this Encampment (at Cardean) along the hollow of Strathmore, are also still visible: There are about 500 yards of it in good preservation in the eastern part of this parish commencing in a plantation on the farm Reidie and stretching along some moor ground on the lands of Auchindory."

"From Cupar, the Roman Road took a north-east direction towards Reedie, in the parish of Airly. On the south of this hamlet, the vestiges of the road appear: and for more than half a mile, the ancient road forms the modern way. The Roman Road now points towards Kirriemuir, past which it appears to have gone, in its course to the large Roman Camp at Battledykes."

A short distance [north west] of the offices, on a small eminence Mr Rattary points out the site of the Castle of Baikie, nothing of it is to be now traced. "The Castle of Baikie was situated in the parish of Airlie, within an hour ride of Clova, and stood on rising ground near the west end of a great moss. It was moated in old times, reached by a draw bridge, and part of the ruins of the Castle and Causeway were visible towards the close of last century. David Lindsay, the son of Margaret Fenton, and Bailiff of the Earls of Crawford for several years, was designed of Lethnot & Bakie, and is the last designed Lindsay of Bakie, and it is likely that the estate had passed from the family in the time of his successor, for the 3rd Lord Glamis had charters of it in 1489."

"The castle of Balrie, another ruin, situated in Strathmore, has been built upon a rising ground towards the west end of the present moss (formerly a large loch) containing about 120 acres, to the eastward of the Castle & 6 to 8 to the westward. The present proprietor about 10 years ago dug up a part of the causeway which led into the drawbridge so that there is little doubt of this place having been once very strong, and almost impregnable. The walls in general are about 8 feet thick: but the house has been small & rather intended for a place of refuge in times of danger, than the constant residence of a family"

Better than a quarter of a mile west of this farm house [Wester Cardean] there are some remains of a Roman Camp to be seen.
"near Cardean there are the remains of a Roman Camp, which though partially obliterated by agricultural operations, can still be distinctly traced. The natural position is very strong. It is protected on the north by the Isla which comes nearly close to it, and on the south by the Dean, which there flows through a deep gorge."
New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]
The above description is correct, and the traces although probably now slighter than at the time of the writing of the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] are yet defficient [sufficient] to have enabled me to identify the extent of the Camp, with the assistance of Admiral Popham and his forester David Gibb.

The entries in red ink on page 53-4
are by Major Bayley, R.E. [Royal Engineers], who was inter-
ested in archaeology, and mainly responsible
for recording the Roman fort on the map.
The tiles (p.53) suggest the presence
of a bath-house nearby; but the exact site
is not recorded. |

A large river running in a southwesterly direction. From the Castle of Airlie to Ruthven it forms the western boundary of the parish of Airlie. A little below the Bridge of Cardean it receives the Dean Water, thence it has its confluence with the Tay. |

Mr. H. J. Fitchie of Deanfield and David Gibb, Forester |
037 |
Mr. Fitchie in a note to me quite corroborates the statement of David Gibb, that the articles enumerated (with others) have been found at various times within this portion of the Enclosure of the Camp; and which clearly establishes its origin and character.

This artificial cavity, of which some of the stones indicating the site were uncovered in my presence, appears to have been of the nature of the Weems discovered in other places in this locality
