Admiral Popham Rev. [Reverend] Mr. Bartney, Ruthven David Gibb Forester, Cardean H. J. Fitchie of Deanfield |
043 | Better than a quarter of a mile west of this farm house [Wester Cardean] there are some remains of a Roman Camp to be seen. "near Cardean there are the remains of a Roman Camp, which though partially obliterated by agricultural operations, can still be distinctly traced. The natural position is very strong. It is protected on the north by the Isla which comes nearly close to it, and on the south by the Dean, which there flows through a deep gorge." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] The above description is correct, and the traces although probably now slighter than at the time of the writing of the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] are yet defficient [sufficient] to have enabled me to identify the extent of the Camp, with the assistance of Admiral Popham and his forester David Gibb.
