[situation] At Mouth of River Leven West extremity of Largo Bay.
The Town of Leven is Situated on the Sea Coast, at the mouth of the River from which it takes its name, it Consists of 2 principal streets running parallel to each other from North to South, with a Variety of Cross Streets and lanes running into them. There have been Several handsome houses lately erected along the Beach, principally for the Accommodation of Sea bathers. It has no magistrates, but has so far taken advantage of the general Police Act, as to adopt its provisions for cleaning, lighting and supplying the Town with Water. It contains a Parish Church, Manse and School; A free Church, Manse and School; a United presbyterian Church, two private Schools, two Public buildings (the Masons' & Gardeners' Halls) where all Concerts, Balls, Auctions &c are held. A Branch of both the Commercial & Western Banks of Scotland. A post office having two arrivals and deliveries daily, two good Inns, with upwards of 20 public houses and the usual number of Drapers, Butchers Bakers and small dealers shops requisite for a small Town. The Harbour is much confined and too small for the increasing trade, together with being very dangerous of Approach, from the Constant shifting of the sands about the Mouth of the River. The population of Town from the Census taken in 1851 Amounts to 2187. the principal trade carried on in it is the Weaving of Coarse linens for the Manufacture of which there are several factories in the suburbs, with an Iron foundery which give a large quantity of employment to the inhabitants. |

A Parish in Fifeshire on the Firth of Forth. Its extreme length from Southwest to N.E. [North East] is about 5 3/4 Miles; its breadth varies from one to two Miles. On the south it is bounded by the Firth of Forth; on the east by Scoonie, and a detached portion of Markinch; on the North by Kennoway & Markinch. There are no detached portions belonging to or within this parish. It has Seven villages. - East Wemyss in which is situated the Parish Church, West Wemyss, Buckhaven, Methill & East & West Coalton. This pier and harbour was erected in the year 1462 by the Earl of Wemyss, and rebuilt by Admiral Wemyss in the year 1837.
The work is done in a strong tough manner and will admit vessels of 200 tons at high water formerly large quantities of salt and coal was shipped at it, but at present very little is done, except as a shelter for fishing boats. |

A small village a little westward of the town of Leven with a population amounting to nearly 300. It contains a Quod Sacra church attached to the Parish of Wemyss, there is a small congregation attached to the Free Church who hold their meetings in a private house, a school house 5 public houses, a few grocers shops and a small rope walk for making fishermens tackle. The houses are principially 1 story high and present a mesurable appearance, they are chiefly occupied by fishermen, colliers + weavers. There was formerly a large manufactory of salt carried on here with great spirit, but no such thing at present exists, the whole village presents the appearance of going rapidly to decay. Admiral Wemyss of Wemyss Castle is sole proprietor. |
