Leightons Hist. of Fife
025 A small village a little westward of the town of Leven with a population amounting to nearly 300. It contains a Quod Sacra church attached to the Parish of Wemyss, there is a small congregation attached to the Free Church who hold their meetings in a private house, a school house 5 public houses, a few grocers shops and a small rope walk for making fishermens tackle. The houses are principially 1 story high and present a mesurable appearance, they are chiefly occupied by fishermen, colliers + weavers. There was formerly a large manufactory of salt carried on here with great spirit, but no such thing at present exists, the whole village presents the appearance of going rapidly to decay. Admiral Wemyss of Wemyss Castle is sole proprietor.
