The ruins of an ancient castle, situated at the farm house of Pitcruvie, supposed to have been the residence of a branch of the family of Lindsay who obtained a charter of the lands of Pitcruvie and others in 1498. ( bide Leighton's His; [History] of Fife) It has been a plain and substantially built edifice & evidently covered a much larger extent than shown in the existing remains, a portion of the outer walls being all that now remains of it. The date of its erection is unknown. |

On the bank of the water of Keil, to the north of Largo House, is an old square tower, part of the Castle of Balcruvie, anciently also called Pitcruvie. In all probability this castle was erected by Sir John Lindsay, as a seperate residence during his father's lifetime. The traditions is that Balcruvie belonged to the family of Crawford ; but this is a mistake originating in the fact that the family of Lindasy at a subsequent period, succeeded to the estates and titles of the Earl of Crawford.

"On the banks of the Keil, a small stream, are the ruins of the Castle of Balcruvie, once possessed by the Noble family of Crawford." New Stat: Acct: [Statistical Account] of Scot (Scotland): (Fifeshire) page 438_

"Monumental Stone" to be written on Plan by order of Captain [---] R.E. [Royal Engineer]. This stone does not appear to be of that rare descriptions represented in Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] and other writing as it resembled in a large many of the Sepulchoral monuments seen in some old Grave yards in Ireland.
In the lawn in front of Largo House is one of those carved stones called Runie. A considerable number of years ago one half of this stone was found on the estate of Largo: and at a subsequent period, the other half was found at a place more than a mile distant. Being found to be a part of the same ancient relique, they were built into a wall in order to preserve them; but General Durham had the two pieces removed and erected on a pedestal, in their present situations on the lawn. This singular monument presents on the one side a maltese cross, something like that on the cross at Crail; the upper part of the stone presenting a circle, [---] of a part of Crail Cross, and one of the side slabs of the St Andrews sarcophagus. On the right side of the body of the Cross, below the [---] are two fishes or serpents intertwined, having heads like horses: and on the left, something like a figure sitting having an elephants head, of which the trunk is apparent. The body of this cross been ornamented with a variety of carving, some of which would appear to have been serpents intertwined. The reverse side of this monument represents the usual hunting Oclus which this Class of [---] almost invariably represents."

"Wood's Hospital._ John Wood, a cadet of Sir Andrew's family, by deed of mortification, dated 7th July 1659, bequeathed £68.418 Scotch, to build and endow an hospital within the Parish. for the maintenance of thirteen indigent and enfeebled persons of the name of Wood, besides a gardener, a porter, and a chaplain, with £17 a year. He then appointed the Earl of Wemyss, the lairds of Largo, Lundin, and Balfour, together with the minister, and [---] members of the Kirk-sessions as patrons. The hospital was built in 1667, at an expense Lamont says of 9000 merks. It cost in all £2000 It is fitted up for sixteen inmates, Each having a sitting and a sleeping apartment. In the centre is a large hall, where they are [---] prayers, morning and evening; above which is a room for the meetings of the patrons. The annual allowance to each hospitelles is £15 paid monthly and vegetables. The finds arise from the interest of £2000, and a farm, the rent of which averages £280_

Largo.
A standing stone in the lawn in front of Largo House it was fixed up in its present position in the year 1839 by the then proprietor of Largo estate. It is about 6 feet high 3 feet broad and about 8 or ten inches thick and stands on a square pedestal of cut stone about 3 feet high and six feet square on either side on the pedestal is the date of erection (1839). A considerable number of years ago one half of this stone was found on the estate of Largo. And at a subsequent period the other half was found at place more than a mile distant being found to be parts of the same ancient relique they were put together and in their present position by the late General Durham - on the side the stone is ornamented with a Maltese Cross the upper part of the same being ornamented with an oval circle on the right side of the body of the cross below the transepts are two fish or serpents intertwined, having heads like horses. On the left something like a figure sitting having an elephants head of which the trunk is apparent. The body of the cross has been ornamented with a variety of carving some of which would appear to have been serpents intertwined. On the reverse side is the representation of 3 men on horseback and there are five dogs or other animals - also the figure of an elephant very distinct though rather grotesquely formed. In "Leightons" Hist of Fife P 133. It is said to be one of those class of buried stones erroneously called Rhunic |
