Mr. Doby says the property was purchased from time to time by a Tailor from the "Cabbage" of cloth entrusted to him. Mr. Wilson says it obtained the name from the original purchaser being a gardener - however it is well known and gives name to a County Bridge in its immediate vicinity. |

I have made careful inquiry on this subject and could get no information of the Romans having encamped on these heights beyond that already quoted from the New Stat. Acct [Statistical Account] No one knows of any remains having been found, the place is known by the name of Balsillie Laws, not Balsillie Heights and the mounds referred to seem to be natural, they are certainly too large, and too irregularly shaped to have been Tumuli.

"of the Leven after defeating the Ninth legion on the Orr" "In 1335 the dam erected to drown the Scotch in
Loch Leven Castle was near the junction of this and Portmoak. The existence and locality of this dam
have been proved by the removal of its foundations in the recent operations on the Leven."
"About 1760 a Stone Coffin or Urn was found near the Gallant Knowe on Strathendry"
The Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Nicol of Leslie and Mr. Downy the Gardener at Strathendry House were the writers of the Article on Leslie in the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] I consulted Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Nicol who could give me very little information about what he had himself written, he is since dead. Mr. Downy Says the Gallant Knowe has been removed to repair roads but he can point out the site if necessary. the remains of which mention is made in the foregoing quotations were found for the most part in the bed of the River Leven during the operation of widening it about 30 years ago. Mr Downy was present when what was supposed to be the foundation of the dam to drown the Scotch in Loch Leven was found. the place was Auchmoor Bridge and the remains were 3 or 4 large loose stones a little below the bed of the River. Mr. Downy does not believe this to have been the foundation of the dam himself, although he has written it in the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] he thinks the stones formed part of it and may have been washed down the River by the current of the stream. The other remains noticed in the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] that I could get any information about are mentioned in the descriptive remarks of the objects near where they were found.

The New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] has it that "Goatmilk Hill constituted one of the
links in the chain of Danish Forts which
Stretched from Fifeness to Stirling. While
those positions were occupied by the invaders a Mill was erected on the Leven which retains the name of Mill-danes"
I have consulted Mr. Wilson Senr. [Senior] the Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Nicol and Mr. Downy about the remains of Danish Forts or other works on Goatmilk Hills, they all think it probable that the Danes encamped there but none of them heard of any works. I walked over every part of the ground carefully myself, along with Mr. Leslie the occupier, and could not discover any work. Mr. Leslie was born on the farm and never heard of anything of the sort. Mention is made of the Danes being encamped on both sides of the Leven when those in the Northern Camp were attacked by the Scotch, defeated and many drowned in the River before those encamped on the South side could render them any assistance. I have made particular inquiry about the site of this Battle but no one that I have met with would undertake to point out.

A square tower built of rough whinstone situated on a considerable eminence. it was erected in the year 1812, for Obtaining Views of the Sea and Surrounding Country. The sudden death of the proprietor (W. Blythe) caused it to be left in an unfinished state to the present time. It is popularly termed "Blythes Folly" by the inhabitants, being considered by them as an unwise undertaking. This page copied from Name Book for Plan 31B. |
