The ruins of an ancient chapel situates at the West end of the Village of Earlsferry. The wall are about 3 feet in height with the exception of one of its gables which stands its original height. A stone in it has the following inscription "Chapel built by McDuff Earl of Fife 1093". by whom it is said to have been erected as a token of gratitude for the kindness he received from the inhabitants and fishermen of Earlsferry, while flying from the vengance of Macbeth. The above date which was originally inscribed on a stone of the building had become almost illegible untill it was sometime ago renewed and cut afresh on another which was put into the wall in place of the ancient inscribed stone. Two old men in the neighbourhood have informed the field examiner that they remember seeing the original inscription. |

A village connected with the west end of Elie. It consists of one street about 40 chains in length. the houses are from 1 to 2 stories in height having gardens attached, and occupied by Weavers, Colliers and fishermen. It was anciently a Royal Burgh and governed by a Provost and Bailies etc, but it along with the burghs of Falkland Newburgh and Auchtermuchty, some time prior to the Union were relieved from the burden as it was then esteemed of sending commissioners, whom they were obliged to pay to represent them in Parliament. Being thus by their own desire disfranchised as burgh. Its original Charter was destroyed by fire in Edinburgh & its date is not ascertained. A new charter was granted by James VI in 1589. "Earls-ferry a little fisher town, which is said Macduff Earl of Fife, got erected into a Royal Burgh, because the fishers here transported him over the Frith, whom he made his escape from Macbeth" See Sibbalds Hist. [History] page 334. |

[Quotation] "There was once a village named Buchlyvie in the neighbourhood of the mansion house. One of the ladies Anstruther ordered it to be removed and it is said that on leaving the place one of the old inhabitants a female who passed among the neighbours for being wiser than she ought predicted that the family should not flourish again for seven generations. The prophecy is still devoutly believed by a number of people: and the fact had added strength to their faith. - the sixth proprietor within the memory of middle aged men being now in possession and some disaster having occurred in the history of them all. A large loch situated between the village of Kilconquhar and the Demesne Lands of Elie House. it is 40 chains long by 20 broad and has two small artificial islands in it, planted with shrubs, they were formed for the use of the swans - there are about 40 of them on it "This loch was originally called Redmire. from which much fuel was got, as Peats. It had a drain westwards to the sea, the tradition of the place is that in the year 1624 or 25 . the drain was filled up with sand driven by a violent gust of wind from the sea and the water thus stop'd in its course became a lake - See note page 357 Sibbalds Hist [History] of Fifeshire.
A woman belonging to the village of Pittenweem, is said to have been drowned in this loch for some supposed crime of Witchcraft. |

A small village situated on the coast of the Firth of Forth and consists of chiefly two irregularly situated rows of dwelling houses from one to two storyshigh between which the street is in some instances uselessly wide, and again inconveniently narrow. at both ends of the above street are detached fragments of single and double rows of houses of the same description and all having small gardens attached to them. they are chiefly occupied by weavers colliers and fishermen. there are a few small grocer shops & two public houses. It is an ancient Royal Burgh having a Townhouse, which is its only public building the tradition is that it was originally constituted a burgh by Malcolm III between 1057 and 1093 at the request of Macduff the Maormor of Fife who after being concealed in a cave near Kincraigpoint was in his flight from the vengence of Macbeth, was by the fishermen here ferried across the Firth to Dunbar, from this circumstance it was called Earlsferry & it likewise obtained the privilege, that the persons of all who should cross the Firth from hence should be for a time iviolable
This privilege is said to have been used in the of Douglas and Carnegie of Finhaven-see Sibbalds Hist Page 224
No boat being allow'd to leave the shore in pursuit 'till those who had already sailed were halfway over
His first Charter, the date of which is unknown was destroyed by fire in Edinburgh. a new charter was in consequence granted by James IV, in which it is narrated that the burgh of Earlshall was"old past memory of men. erected into one free burgh" by this charter all its former privileges were renewed and confirmed. a considerable trade is said to have formerly been carried on here and two annual fairs & 2 weekly markets are said have been held here, both are now discontinued |

A harbour or landing place for vessels erected about 14 chains within the tide mark off the village of Elie and on the margin of a small island. it consists of sunk wall along the north and west side of the island and small stone pier about 270 links long projecting at nearly a right angle from the forementioned wall along both of which vessels can come for loading or unloading purposes. formerly a Breakwater of stone and lime erection connected the South Eastern end of the island with the main land and affording a considerable shelter to the vfessels in the Harbour but from a neglect of occassional necessary repairs this has been swept away piece-meal by the action of the tides save a small fragment. Close by the island, the pier & other buildings forming the harbour are in an indifferent state of repairs at present. It was once repaired by a general collection made at all the churches throughout Scotland. this was about the year 1696. It has 22 feet of water at Spring tides & is of easy access. Its chief exports are agricultural produce Fish &c. imports goods for shopkeepers & merchants in the surrounding district |

A Creek or indenture in the bay of the Firth of Forth a little to the east side of Elie Harbour on the foreshore it is of natural formation about 6 chains & 12 or 13 long its foreshore consists of sand shingle Bolders and flat rocks. it is bounded on both sides by a ridge of large broken rocks. Here a harbour could easily be constructed for ships of the greatest burden (at H.W.) [High Water] and in to which lesser ships might enter at low water but nothing in this way has ever been attempted here. Wood imported to Elie Harbour is usually thrown out of the vessels & floated in by this Creek, hence the name. |
