026 A harbour or landing place for vessels erected about 14 chains within the tide mark off the village of Elie and on the margin of a small island. it consists of sunk wall along the north and west side of the island and small stone pier about 270 links long projecting at nearly a right angle from the forementioned wall along both of which vessels can come for loading or unloading purposes. formerly a Breakwater of stone and lime erection connected the South Eastern end of the island with the main land and affording a considerable shelter to the vfessels in the Harbour but from a neglect of occassional necessary repairs this has been swept away piece-meal by the action of the tides save a small fragment. Close by the island, the pier & other buildings forming the harbour are in an indifferent state of repairs at present. It was once repaired by a general collection made at all the churches throughout Scotland. this was about the year 1696. It has 22 feet of water at Spring tides & is of easy access. Its chief exports are agricultural produce Fish &c. imports goods for shopkeepers & merchants in the surrounding district
