A small parish and royal burgh in the county and Synod of Fife, and presbytery of St. Andrews. The parish is of a very irregular form. It contains about 600 acres of arable land, and about 9 or 10 acres of common, on which the burgesses have the privileges of pasturage and casting turf. It is bounded on the south by the frith of Forth, along which it extends for about half a mile; on the east by Anstruther Easter; on the north by Carnbee and Kilrenny; and on the west by Pitenweem. The parish church appears to be a very ancient building, from the remains of a large choir, and the Gothic structure of the steeple.
