026 A small village situated on the coast of the Firth of Forth it consists of one long irregular and unconnected row of houses along the H. [High] Water Mark With two fragments of a back street parallel with the same, with several connecting lanes running between both and all more or less fronted with dwelling houses. the houses are from one to two and three storys high, but mostly the former and are all in general good repair and occupied by tradesmen Shopkeepers agricultural labourers and Fishermen but chiefly the latter. there is three public houses a number of small Grocers Shops, and one Cloth Shop in it. also a Brewery Post Office, a Ph. [Parish] School a private school and an infant school, and a Town house or Townhall
It is an important fishing Station; about 300 individuals including Men Women & Children being employ'd in connection with the fishery.
It was erected into a "burgh of barony" by a Charter granted in favour of Sir W. Sandilands, in 1584. It is governed by three Bailies, a treasurer & 15 Councilors there is no fairs or Markets held in it, Pittenweem is the nearest Market town to it. It is the Property of Mr. Baird.
