026 | The site of an old castle on the farm of Rires, no trace of it now remains, the present farmer in Rires farm took down the walls of the Castle about 14 years ago, and dug up the foundation of it, using the stones for the building of ring fences on the farm. the Castle was an oblong square, built of rough unhewn stones, the wall being 6 to seven feet thick. an outhouse which stood clos by it still remains and is occupied by a Hind. A rampart of earth and stones encircled the Castle on the inside of the rampart was a deep Fosse which could at will be fill'd with water over which there was a drawbridge. Anciently it belonged according to Sibbalds Hist. [History] p. 357 to a family of the name of Weems, and by marriage to a family named Pitsligoe, afterwards to a Captain Chrichton descendant of the Earls of Dumfries. Now the property belongs to Alexander Boyne Esqr. |
