026 | [situation] About 1 1/8 miles N.W. [Northwest] from Kilconquhar. A compact, neatly built and thriving village, situated on the road leading from Largo to Pittenweem. It consists of a long, regular street running east and west, and two lanes diverging from it. It is inhabited chiefly by farm servants, tradesmen, and mechanics. The Commercial Bank has an agency here; a justice-of-piece courts are held here five times in the year. It has a weekly corn market on Wednesday, and two annual fairs, on the 2nd Friday in June and October. It contains the united Presbyterian Church, a school and a Post Office. This village is a Burgh-of-Barony under the Balcarres family, and received its name from Colin, 3rd Earl of Balcarres. Population in 1841 about 570. |
