A parish in the county of Fife, bounded on the east and North by the parish of Abbotshall, on the North and West by Auchtertool and Aberdour, on the West by Burntisland, and on the South and Southeast by the Frith of Forth. Its greatest length is about 4 3/4 miles and breadth bout 3 1/2 miles. in general throughout it is well diversified with cultivated fields and plantations etc. Their are some antiquities in this parish, and the royal burgh of Kinghorn on the coast near its S. [South] East extremity. A small portion of Aberdour parish is situated within this parish, but no part of Kinghorn is situated within any other parish.

[Fullarton's] Gazetteer. 037 [situation] 1 7/8 Miles South of Kirkcaldy. A considerable village, situated on the North side of the Firth of Forth, and about midway between the towns of Kirkcaldy and Burntisland. It has three Mills worked by steam &v water two of which are engaged in Spinning flax & cotton - the other situated near the Parish Church & Harbour is a Corn Mill, which employ a great number of hands. Some of the inhabitants are engaged in trade others in Agriculture and fishing. It is said to be an ancient Burgh - "The Burgh is very ancient, and is said to have been first erected into a Royal Burgh by King David 1st. the whole of its privileges having been confirmed by Alexander 1st" Leighton's His. [History] of Fife Vol. [Volume] 3rd. The privileges have been withdrawn within the last 15 years, but the inhabitants entertain hopes of having them restored. "Canutus King of Norway sent a fleet with 9000 men, commanded by his Brother, who landing here, over-ran & ravaged the adjacent Country. " But Macbeth, Thane of Falkland and [Baucho] Thane of Lochaber, defeated them. Baucho allowed the Corps of their Chief men to be buried in Inchcolm so saith Buchans lib 12" Sibbalds Fife & Kinross.

This name applies to rugged rocks on the shore near Ross ness, and extending northwards for about 15 chains - There is a specimen of the Basaltes here also to which a note in Sibbalds History of Fife makes the following reference. "About half way between Kinghorn & Pettycur close by the sea there is a specimen of the Basaltes, which well deserves the attention of the curious, who may not have had an opportunity of Surveying those more stupendous works of Nature of the same kind. The Giants Causeway in Ireland the Pereneire near St Saudoux in Auvergne in France or the celebrated island of Staffa. The basaltic columns are of different diameters with four, five six or seven faces. they are in general about 12 or 14 feet in height with a few joints or [cracks] in each. all parallel to one another and inclining to the east.

Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] [Quotation] "an eminence near the centre of the town of Kinghorn, in Fifeshire, is still preserved in that place. It served as a sea mark to sailors navigating the Forth. This building becoming ruinous a gentleman in the neighbourhood obtained leave of the Strathmore family, to whom it belonged, to take the stones for the purpose of building, on condition that he should put down a pillar on the spot whence he took the stones, with this inscription. "Here stood Glamis Tower." this pillar is remembered by many of the inhabitants at present (A.D. 1789)" Grosse's Antiquities page 256. An old man who is employed as labourer in the Orchard informed me he found the foundation of a building when digging here some time ago _ but the building referred to in the Stat. [Statistical] Acct. Mr. Jeffrey Mr. Davidson 037 [situation] In the town of Kinghorn. A handsome building in the southern part of Kinghorn, erected for the education of the Male & Female children f the Parish. "The principal School of the Parish is partly burgh and partly Parochial. It was erected at the expense of the Town Council, the inhabitants, and the heritors, and the teachers are paid by the town council & the heritors. The later Robert Philp Esqr. of Edenshead, mortified a portion of his large fortune for the purpose of educating a certain number of children in the parishes of Kirkcaldy, Dysart, Abbotshall and Kinghorn. In all the other Parhs. [Parishes] handsome schoolhouses were erected for the purposes of the donor, but in the Ph. [Parish] of Kinghorn this has been considered unnecessary owing to the excellence of the school already existing. The teachers of the Burgh & parochial school have also the charge of those children who receive the benefit of Philp's mortification, and receive an additional salary from the managers on that account, beside receiving an excellent ordinary education, the children are furnished with Clothing, with books, paper, pens, ink and slates, and on leaving the School receive a sum of money from the funds, varying from £2 to £5 Sterling. In the same building with the School there is an excellent library and a museum which does great credit to the intelligence & love for knowledge of the Parishioners." A cave in the Limestone Rocks entering from the coast, and is about 10 Feet high and 3 1/2 feet wide at the commencement growing gradually lower and narrower for 160 Links where it turns a little to the right and ends in a sort of chamber. The common tradition with regard to it is That it extended to Dunfermline Abbey and was formerly used by the Monks. I heard this tradition from many, amongst them the Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Bowie Mr. Veitch and Mr. Robertson but the Revd. [Reverend] Mr Hardy says that the cave was visited by him in company with a Civil Engineer from Edinburgh, the opinion of the latter was that the cave was artificial and used as a Level to a bed of Limestone, he came to this conclusion from the appearance of the sides which appear to have been worked and not worn by water
