037 | [situation] 1 7/8 Miles South of Kirkcaldy. A considerable village, situated on the North side of the Firth of Forth, and about midway between the towns of Kirkcaldy and Burntisland. It has three Mills worked by steam &v water two of which are engaged in Spinning flax & cotton - the other situated near the Parish Church & Harbour is a Corn Mill, which employ a great number of hands. Some of the inhabitants are engaged in trade others in Agriculture and fishing. It is said to be an ancient Burgh - "The Burgh is very ancient, and is said to have been first erected into a Royal Burgh by King David 1st. the whole of its privileges having been confirmed by Alexander 1st" Leighton's His. [History] of Fife Vol. [Volume] 3rd. The privileges have been withdrawn within the last 15 years, but the inhabitants entertain hopes of having them restored. "Canutus King of Norway sent a fleet with 9000 men, commanded by his Brother, who landing here, over-ran & ravaged the adjacent Country. " But Macbeth, Thane of Falkland and [Baucho] Thane of Lochaber, defeated them. Baucho allowed the Corps of their Chief men to be buried in Inchcolm so saith Buchans lib 12" Sibbalds Fife & Kinross. |
