An extensive bay of the Eastern coast of Fifeshire extending from near Kenly Water Mouth on the south, to Tents Muir Point on the North. It takes its name from the City of St. Andrews, which is built on this bay.

[History] of Fife. 012 [situation] Eastern portion of the Parish. An Ancient City in the Parish of that name. Situated on the margin of a fine bay & overlooking the German ocean. It was formerly a place of considerable importance, being the ecclesiastical Capital of Scotland, but since the reformation it has fallen into comparative decay, and is now only remarkable for its universities and the prestige of its past greatness. This city is a mile in circuit, and contains three principal streets - South Street, Market Street and North Street, which are lighted with gas, and intersected by others of less dimensions. The Public buildings are neat & tasteful erections, and many of them are of great antiquity. This city is governed by a Provost, dean of guild, four baillies and 23 Councillors. As a royal burgh it is classed with Cupar, Easter & Wester Anstruther, Crail, Kilrenny and Pittenweem & unites with these burghs in returning a member to parliament.

There is also a Machine for preparing flooring boards. The Machinery is driven by Steam. The Mill is the property of the Occupier James Duncan, by whom it was built.

[History] of Fife 006; 007; 011; 012; 013 [situation] In the Eastern Portion of the County of Fife. A parish on the eastern coast of Fifeshire, bounded on the North by the Eden River, and its estuary which separates it from the parish of Leuchars, on the northeast by the German Ocean, on the east by the Parishes of Kingsbarns and St. Leonards, and on the south & west by the parishes of Denino, Cameron, Ceres and Kemback. Its greatest length is about 10½ miles from Northwest to southeast, And its average breadth does not exceed 1¾ miles. No part of the parish rises to a great height the highest elevation is about 550 feet above sea level. The City of St. Andrews is in this parish, and is situated upon a rocky ridge, projecting into the Sea, at the bottom of the bay to which it gives its name, of which see descriptive remarks an an adjoining name List. There are two detached portions of St Leonards Ph. [Parish] within St. Andrews. -
