012 | [situation] Eastern portion of the Parish. An Ancient City in the Parish of that name. Situated on the margin of a fine bay & overlooking the German ocean. It was formerly a place of considerable importance, being the ecclesiastical Capital of Scotland, but since the reformation it has fallen into comparative decay, and is now only remarkable for its universities and the prestige of its past greatness. This city is a mile in circuit, and contains three principal streets - South Street, Market Street and North Street, which are lighted with gas, and intersected by others of less dimensions. The Public buildings are neat & tasteful erections, and many of them are of great antiquity. This city is governed by a Provost, dean of guild, four baillies and 23 Councillors. As a royal burgh it is classed with Cupar, Easter & Wester Anstruther, Crail, Kilrenny and Pittenweem & unites with these burghs in returning a member to parliament. |
