This is the mansion of the estate of Rumgally, it is a very old house and is supposed to have been a resting place for several of the Scottish Kings, when travelling between St. Andrews and Falkland Palace.
Above what was formerly an entrance are the arms armorial of a former proprietor. The only date is 1650. Several alterations have been made upon the house, showing the original walls to be about 3 feet thick. The field adjoining the house is all that remains of the parks, the remainder being used for farm purposes. Behind the house close by the river side is the farm steading, a very large and commodious structure. Both farm steading and Mansion house are occupied by the proprietor Alexander Thoms Esq. |

Dura Den is generally allowed by those in the neigbourhood to extend from Pitscottie Mill to the Bridge at Kemback Mill. It is formed by the rugged and in some places perpendicular rocks, on each side of the Ceres Burn. The scenery is wild and romantic. For the most part a turnpike road runs parallel with the river. On the West side of the Den is the Mansion house of Dura, on the east that of Blebo, the river separating the estates. There are four different sets of Mills, with dwelling houses for those employed in them in the Den. The Free Church of Kemback is also here, being built especially for the inhabitants of the Den. The entrance to a cave in the face of a perpendicular rock is seen from the road near that part of the Den called Yoolfield. |

The entrance to this Cave is in the face of perpendicular rocks on the East side of Dura Den. The cave is not very large, and the marks of a pickaxe show it has been smaller. There are two traditions connected with it. The one told me by the minister of the parish is, that the Laird of Kemback, himself a Covenanter hid a few of his friends here; the other is that the Laird himself was hid here from the fury of the persecutors of the Covenanters. But both traditions agree in stating that the Lady of Kemback, for the Crime of Ministering to the necessities of the concealed, was hung by the hair of her head over the Bridge of Dairsie A stone with her initials marks the spot of her cruel death. |

A few yards west of the Manse are the ruins of the old Parish Church. The walls still remain entire, covered thickly with ivy. It has been a very plain building and small in size. Within the walls are the burying places of certain families. Surrounding the ruins and enclosed with a high wall is the grave yard. In it are a few old tomb stones for the most part illegible, the farthest back date is 1736, and 1627 is on the walls of the Church but whether connected with the ruins is doubtful. The burying places of the Families of Dura, Blebo Rumgally and Kemback are here. |
