[Quotation] Wemyss Hall
"On the Southern Slope of Tarvet Hill and overlooking the Vale of Ceres is Wemyss-hall the
"Seat of James Wemyss, Esqr. The house was built in 1696, from a plan by Sir William
"Bruce of Kinross King's architect for Scotland. It is in imitation of the house of Kinross
"but on a smaller scale. Though standing high above the neighbouring valley the house
"is well sheltered by the higher peak of Tarvet Hill which rises behind it and by the
"extensive woods with which it is surrounded. This branch of the ancient family of Wemyss
"is descended from Gavin Wemyss of Powguild third son of Sir John Wemyss of Wemyss who
"constitued Lieutenant of Fife, Kinross, and Clackmannan by commission from Francis and ___
"dated 9th January 1569 and died at Elcho January 1571-2. Gavin of Powguild married Cath
"rine Wemyss heiress of Winthank. She was the daughter of David Wemyss of Winthank who
"was son of Thomas Wemyss of Winthank fourth son of Sir John Wemyss of Wemyss who obtain
"ed various charters in 1468 and 1506. Besides Winthank this family acquired the lands of
"Hill Tarvet which after the building of the present mansion house in 1696 came to be designated
"Wemyss-Hall and subsequently they also acquired the lands of Scots Tarvet formerly called
"Inglis Tarvet". &c, See Leighton's, Hist [History] of Fife vol. 2 pp. 39. 40 |

[situation] On the summit of Wemyss Hall Hill.
A stone pillar of a circular shape, about 13 feet high and surmounted by a unicorn finely carved. This was the market cross of Cupar and it bears the date 1683 - but it is not certain that this was the period of its erection - It was presented by the magistrates of Cupar some years ago to Capt. [Captain] Rigg of Tarvet; this gentleman subsequently presented it to Capt. [Captain] Wemyss of Wemyss Hall who placed it here in 1817 - Edmund Kellock of Wemyss Place, one of the workmen who assisted to place it in its present position, states that the date of its removal from Cupar cannot be ascertained. It is used as a trigl. [Trigonometrical] station called "Tarvit Hill."Tnl [Trigonometrical Station] |

[situation] West bank of River Eden opposite Tarvit Mill.
The site of where the Lords of the Congregation are supposed to have pitched their tents, extends from Brighton Brick and Tile Work, to Russell Mains; on Cupar Muir, and on the North side of the Eden, and almost parallel to it. They commenced early on the morning of the 13th June 1559, making all necessary preparations for action; being roused by the preaching of Knox. the Lords of the Congregation and their numerous followers were determined to fight for the full liberty of their conscience, i.e. to worship as the Bible, and their conscience dictated to them. The Earl of Argylle, and Lord James Moray were the principal leaders. The forces of Mary of Guise, were encamped on the opposite side of the Eden.
This site was pointed out by Thomas Shaw Esqr., Writer, and Mr. Galloway, Farmer,- both of whom have been long resident in this district. Their information concerning it is corroborated by the tradition of the County. |

[Quotation]
"Along the slope of this hill, under the duke of [Chatelherault and M. D'Oyeel], lay at one time the army which was intended by Mary of Guise to crush the efforts of the reformers. On the opposite bank were stationed those who had determined to die rather than that popery should longer lord it over the conscience of men; and on this hill, where we now stand, the treaty was subscribed which, though soon broken through by the queen-regent, gave time to the reformers, and ultimately led to the establishment of the Presbyterian religion in Scotland" Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland Vol II [Volume 2] p. 289. |

This camp is on the face of a rising ground on the farm of Scots Tarvit. Circular mounds may be traced on the spot but whether the stone wall, forming part of these mounds, belong to the camp is doubtful. Tradition assigns these mounds to the Danes.
Stone coffins and human bones of great size have been dug up in various places near this camp.
It is of an oval shape and consists of two earthen ramparts: the outer one is about 180 links long and 150 links broad - the inner one is a little smaller. Both are much decayed. |

This is a large farm steading with dwelling house, occupied by the Messrs. Bell, Hill Tarvit. The original name of the farm was "The Chapel". That a religious house of some kind existed here is supported by the circumstance, that on an old plan in the possession of Mr. Gourlay, one of the fields of this farm is called the "Glebe".
And south of the steading a well, now filled up, was known as the "Monks Well". The present name was given by the proprietor, Capt. [Captain] Wemyss, Wemyss Hall, in honour of a member of his family. |

[Quotation]
"The Church of Ceres, previous to the reformation, was a rectory which, with its tiends, belonged to the provostry of Kirkheugh, a religious house in St. Andrews. Besides the principal altar there was a chapel or altarage dedicated to St. Ninian, the patronage of which belonged to the family of Craighall. The present church was built on the site of the old one, in 1806. It stands upon a rising ground between the old part of the village and the suburbs of Bridgend of Glaidney Cotton." [situation] About 1 3/8 miles N.W. [North West] from Wemyss Hall.
The site of the forces of Mary of Guise under the command of the Duke of Chattelrault. is supposed to extend from the two mile stone on the Garlie Bank, (of the road leading from Cupar to Kirkcaldy) to the offices of Edenwood, and almost parallel to the Eden. After pitching their tents, they commenced to make all necessary arrangements for action; on the morning of the 13th June 1559; so as to cut down the rebels who wished to upset the state church, and to carry on their religious ceremonies as the Bible and their conscience dictated. Both armies were ready for action when the Duke Chattelrault, seeing his army far inferior to those of the Lords of the Congregation, sent a messenger to propose an armistice. They, unwilling to risk an action complied, and the principal men in both armies repaired to the Garlie Bank, the highest part of which, somewhat about the two mile stone, they are supposed to have met and signed that truce, and from that point they were able to command a fine view of both armies ready for battle.
This site was pointed out by Thomas Shaw Esqr. Writer, and Mr. Galloway. Farmer, both of whom have been long resident in this district. Their definition of it is corroborated by the tradition of the country. |

"Along the slope of this hill, under the duke of [Chatelherault and M. D'Oyeel], lay at one time the army which was intended by Mary of Guise to crush the efforts of the reformers. On the opposite bank were stationed those who had determined to die rather than that popery should longer lord it over the conscience of men; and on this hill, where we now stand, the treaty was subscribed which, though soon broken through by the queen-regent, gave time to the reformers, and ultimately led to the establishment of the Presbyterian religion in Scotland" Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland Vol I [Volume 1] p. 289. |
