Messrs. Bell Occupiers Thomas Gourlay Esq. Craigrothie Ho. [House] David Dewar Craigrothie Mill. Johnston's Co. [County] Map |
011 | [situation] A little W. [West] from Craigothie. This is a large farm steading with dwelling house, occupied by the Messrs. Bell, Hill Tarvit. The original name of the farm was "The Chapel". That a religious house of some kind existed here is supported by the circumstance, that on an old plan in the possession of Mr. Gourlay, one of the fields of this farm is called the "Glebe". And south of the steading a well, now filled up, was known as the "Monks Well". The present name was given by the proprietor, Capt. [Captain] Wemyss, Wemyss Hall, in honour of a member of his family. |
