011 [situation] On the summit of Wemyss Hall Hill.
A stone pillar of a circular shape, about 13 feet high and surmounted by a unicorn finely carved. This was the market cross of Cupar and it bears the date 1683 - but it is not certain that this was the period of its erection - It was presented by the magistrates of Cupar some years ago to Capt. [Captain] Rigg of Tarvet; this gentleman subsequently presented it to Capt. [Captain] Wemyss of Wemyss Hall who placed it here in 1817 - Edmund Kellock of Wemyss Place, one of the workmen who assisted to place it in its present position, states that the date of its removal from Cupar cannot be ascertained. It is used as a trigl. [Trigonometrical] station called "Tarvit Hill."Tnl [Trigonometrical Station]

13 Parish of Cupar.

[Quotation]
"The ancient cross of Cupar still stands, and is seen from a great distance on the top of the Hill of Wemyss Hall. It was carried up and placed there by the late Col. [Colonel] Wemyss, father of the present proprietor of Wemyss Hall, when it had been removed from its original position to make way for the improvements that were making upon the streets. It is a straight round column surmounted by the town arms, and placed now upon a strong pedestal, composed of the rock of the hill on which it stands" New Stat: Acct: [Statistical Account]
