011 | [situation] Near the centre of the County of Fife. A large town, A Royal Burgh - Parliamentary Burgh & Market town situated on the north side of the River Eden. at a point where this last river is joined by the "Lady Burn" It contains three large principal streets namely Crossgate lying South and North, Bonnygate lying east and West and St. Catherine St. which is a continuation of this last named in its first named direction. it has also a large aggregate of suburban districts consisting of streets - fragments of streets as well as a number of Courts Lanes and Alleys. chiefly fronted by dwelling houses. All the houses in the leading streets are of comparatively modern erection, handsomely fitted up and built of stone. It is the chief or principal Town of this County and was created a Royal Burgh by Robert II [2nd] in the year 1382. It is well lighted with Gas and has a large aggregate of Cloth and Mercers shops, Grocers and Bakers shops, Fleshers and all other mentionable Tradesmens shops & Public Houses - with two principal Inns. in it there is also a Parish Church - Episcopal Chapel - with various other dissenting places of worship. A Post Office. two annual Fairs and one Weekly Market. there is four Banks besides a Savings Bank. A Town Hall or House & Free Masons Lodge, Jail, County Buildings containing a County Hall & Court Room in which Sheriff Courts are held, with other accommodation for the Fiscal of Sheriff Court, Sheriff Clerk etc also an Academy - and Minor Schools - It joins with St. Andrews, E&W [East and West] Anstruther, Pittenweem, Crail and Kilconquhar in sending a member to Parliament. |
