27 Parish of Monimail Plan 10B Trace 8[Quotation] "South-west of Rankeillour is Wester Fernie, the seat of Francis Balfour, Esqr. This house is obviously of great antiquity and has at one time been a place of considerable strength, surrounded by marshy ground which defended its approach. The grounds are now well drained and richly ornamented with old timber. Fernie appears to have been part of the original estate of the Earls of Fife and the vulgar tradition is, though there is no authority for the supposition, that it was one of Macduff's Castles."
