009 | [situation] On The Summit of Clatchard Craig. The remains of an old Fort on the top of Clatchard Craig. On the East side it is formed by a steep natural precipice on the other sides it is formed into an irregular oblong by a number of ramparts, and fragments of ramparts at irregular distances from each other. these ramparts are formed of earth and Stones but Chiefly the former, the Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Duncan Parish Minister says there is no record to show whether it is a British, Pictish or of Roman construction. it is one of those hill forts of which there exists no record of the date of its erection or by what class of the early inhabitants of the locality it was constructed. In Leighton's History of Fife page 156 it is said to be one of two British forts which the Parish Contains. |
