It is bearing date 1546 for when it was founded, and 1617 for when finished. It is the ancient residence of the Bruces, the most remarkable of which was the "Hero of Airsmoss" who was a great persecutor of the Covenanters. It is at present the property of Colonel Long Bromley Hill Kent, who keeps it in a middling state of repair on account of its antiquity. It is unoccupied and under the management of James Stenhouse Farmer Commerton who is in possession of the keys, so as to admit any visitors that may wish to see it. |

[situation] About 1 1/4 Miles North from Kincaple
A large moor situated to the East of the parish of Leuchars, and is bounded on the East by St. Andrews Bay; its surface is chiefly rough pasture with a few scattered furze. some of the tenants use it as a rabbit burrow and others for sheep pasture. The property of Colonel Lindsay Balcarres, and Colonel Long Bromley Hill Kent. It is supposed by those versed in history to have derived its name from the circumstance of the Danes settling there and erecting tents, when they invaded the Eastern coast of Scotland; the tradition in the locality states that during the persecution, the Covenanters deserted their habitations, through fear of their pursuers, and went there and lived in tents, hence the name Tents Moor. |

A large river its source is in the parish of Strathmiglo, it runs from that in a north easterly direction till it joins the St. Andrews Bay. It forms the boundary between the parishes of St. Andrews and Leuchars, and is navigable at spring tides as far up as the Guard Bridge, and admits vessels of 70 or 80 tons burden. There is very little traffic on it since the construction of the St. Andrews branch of railway which passes close by Guard Bridge. Near the mouth of the Eden there are large muscle beds of immense value, which are let to tenants by the proprietors every five years. They afford bait to the most of the fishermen along the Eastern coast of Scotland. |
