[Quotation] "In the garden belonging to Pitlethie once stood one of the hunting seats of of James the VI King of Scotland; which had been taken down to a little below the surface, and then rendered invisible. In digging this garden, the spade rung against a firm stone, and as stones are valuable here, upon removing the earth, the foundation of this hunting seat was discovered to a great depth and this [--]. This was carefully raised and a great part of Mr. Lawson's house and offices was built from this quarry. Here too, were found the Royal Arms of Scotland, cut in a stone, which is still preserved, being placed in front of one of the houses. In a field near the house of Pitlethie, grows a venerable spreading thorn, where his Majesty's hawks after their toils were accustomed to refresh themselves through the night" Old Stat. acct.
