The Castle
John Bell Esq. Maryfield
Alexander Carmichael Ferryport
002 [Situation] About 21 chains N.N.W. [North North West] of the Parish Church of Ferry Port on Craig.
A small oblong building with two Circular Towers at two of the opposite corners, one of these towers is two Storys high with a stone arched roof, the other tower And the remainder of it is only one Story high and has likewise a stone arched roof. the walls at base are seven feet thick and are indented with embrasures and are of Considerable Strength. the date or by who it was erected are locally unknown. the first named authority says that it is locally supposed to have been so far erected as a place of strength in Connection with the "Castle" at "Broughty" on the opposite side of the "River Tay" and when so far erected that the building was abandoned - this is the current opinion relative to it - but is nothing more than mere conjecture it locally gets the given name. It is occupied by the proprietor as a Store room for lumber of different sort.

[Note] "The only interesting object of antiquity in the parish
is the remains of an old building usually denominated
the Castle. Of its original purpose and designs however
there is no certain account to be found. From the construction
of the building itself there is reason to believe that
it was erected after the use of firearms and probably
it may have been designed to constitute a protection
against the entrance of any hostile force by the
river and for that purpose to act in concert with
the Castle of Broughty, on the opposite Shore. On
this point however we are left entirely to conjecture. New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Fife pp 83.84"
