"The dead bodies of the Caledonians who fell in the last recontre Seem to have been burnt on an eminence about 400 yard to the Westward near the field of battle on one grand funeral pile with a great many Stones thrown upon the Spot, and several pretty large upright Stones Standing around it though several other had been undermined and fallen over. The proprietor told me that there were more Stones in this Cairn than built a rood of dyke 36 square yards he also mentioned that there was a capacious pit dug to the depth of about 4 yards Containing an immense Quantity of ashes or burnt bones and charred wood intermixed with layers of pure white
OS1/13/26/1/12 [Page] 12 Plan 16 A Trace 4 Parish of Strathmiglo Note: Page 43. Archaeologia Scotica by Col [Colonel] miller "The battle in the meantime Seems to have raged with great fury along the Northern bank of the river; for a little to the west of Wellfield at B another Cairn Stood about 40 years ago. It was not so large as the others; but from the care with which it was Erected, some persons of note were supposed to have been buried there. It was Sunk in the ground, and rose about four or five feet above it, and was Surmounted by a Druids temple of Seven Stones, it was found to Contain urns and bones" Note: The name popularly given to these Stones were the Standing Stones and even to this day the place is called the Site of the Standing Stones. It may have been a druidical temple or not Col [Colonel] Miller it appears was the only person of that opinion Note: Both authors Seem to agree as to these Standing Stones the Site was pointed out by Mr W. Gilmour and an intelligent tradesman who resides in Strathmiglo and who seems to have devoted Some of his spare hours to Antiquarian objects relating to this neighbourhood, his name is William Were it not for this statement I would have adopted the designation Cairn, which it seems to have been with a few upright stones 20 feet beyond the base - which I have not infrequently seen in Yorkshire [Signed] J H Capt [Captain] RE [Royal Engineers]
OS1/13/26/1/13 STANDING STONES SITE OF Standing Stones Site of Continued "of pure white Sand; then a large quantity of Stones thrown on irregularly' then a regular pediment of Stones above these on which were placed small leaden Coffins about two feet long all full of burnt bones each of these leaden coffins amounting in all to Seven, had a long stone erected on end above them but so Supported as not to press too hard upon the Coffins and though the lead was fully two inches thick yet it was very much wasted. "These large Stones placed round the Cairn were called the Standing Stones but alas now Standing no more; only three of the least of them Standing in the Sides of gates in the neighbouring inclosures"

There was also a Stone Coffin* found a little South from the Cairns when digging a ditch for a Stripe of planting on the roadside, Containing a very large Skeleton at full length with uncommonly large teeth, but when it was exposed to the atmosphere or touched it Crumbled down into dust this I think had evidently been a person of distinction among the Romans as it as well as the Urns and other Stone Coffins were all in the vicinity of the Great Cairn" page 42 Archaelogia Scotica. At A. "close by Mr Cheap's house of Wellfield a large Cairn Stood until 26 years ago about 130 Yards in Circumference upon being removed it was found to contain Urns, bones Stone Coffins many remains of Arms completely Oxidised and a deers horn about 150 Yards SE [South East] from that agood many bones were dug up this Season 1828 and a Stone Coffin Containing a Skeleton four feet under the ground"

Note * This Statement appears to be wrong there is an old man who resides in Cowiefauld aged about 74 years who found the Coffin Containing the Skeletons which he States were two in number his name is William Doo Note: It appears that Col [Colonel] Miller and Doctor Small agree in a great measure about this Cairn So much so that in the absence of any other Authorities it might with safety be shewn on the Ordnance Plans.
