There is a mound in a field now Cultivated about 17 chains SW [South West] of Carinzion appearingly artificial. Some years ago when Mr Flockhart was ploughing he found 3 Metal pots or vessels containing Mould or ashes Supposed to have been of Roman origin in the Said Mound or Tumulus. The present dimensions of the object referred to is about 60 links broad 70 long and about 6 feet high. Mr Flockhart the present farmer and the man who found the vessels pointed out the spot as shown on trace. |

Note: Tumulus -The late Col [Colonel] Miller in his Inquiry respecting the Site of the battle of Mons Grampius P44 Archaeologia Scotica, notices the vessels found by Mr Flockhart thus,
"Some Urns were found at L seven or eight
years ago full of bones *; one of which I saw
It was preserved several years and broken by accident
after which not only the bones, but also the Urn itself crumbled into dust."
* There is evidently a mistake on some side between Mr Flockhart who found the vessels & Col [Colonel] Millers description. Mt Flockhart distinctly states that there were no bones in the Pots as he calls them when discovered, but one thing is certain the Pots or Urns were found and generally supposed to have been Roman. |

"The dead bodies of the
Caledonians who fell in the last
recontre Seem to have been burnt
on an eminence about 400 yard
to the Westward near the field of
battle on one grand funeral pile
with a great many Stones thrown
upon the Spot, and several pretty
large upright Stones Standing
around it though several other
had been undermined and fallen
over. The proprietor told me that
there were more Stones in this Cairn
than built a rood of dyke 36 square
yards he also mentioned that there
was a capacious pit dug to the
depth of about 4 yards Containing
an immense Quantity of ashes
or burnt bones and charred wood
intermixed with layers of pure white |

"The battle in the meantime Seems to have raged
with great fury along the Northern bank of the
river; for a little to the west of Wellfield at B
another Cairn Stood about 40 years ago. It was
not so large as the others; but from the care
with which it was Erected, some persons of note
were supposed to have been buried there. It was
Sunk in the ground, and rose about four or five
feet above it, and was Surmounted by a Druids
temple of Seven Stones, it was found to Contain
urns and bones"
Note: The name popularly given to these Stones were the Standing Stones and even to this day the place is called the Site of the Standing Stones. It may have been a druidical temple or not Col [Colonel] Miller it appears was the only person of that opinion
Note: Both authors Seem to agree as to these Standing Stones the Site was pointed out by Mr W. Gilmour and an intelligent tradesman who resides in Strathmiglo and who seems to have devoted Some of his spare hours to Antiquarian objects relating to this neighbourhood, his name is William
Were it not for this statement I would have adopted the designation Cairn, which it seems to have been with a few upright stones 20 feet beyond the base - which I have not infrequently seen in Yorkshire

That a Romish Chapel was established here previous to the Reformation there is little doubt the tradition of the Neighbourhood still keeps alive the Name Mr William Gilmour an old gentleman who is upwards of fourscore years old pointed out the Site as shewn on trace from what he had heard his father and Grandfather say on the subject. The village of Gateside was formerly Styled or Called the Chapelton of the Virgin which is in favor of a chapel being erected here. An old Manuscript plan of Antiquities which I seen today a chapel was marked in Gateside and written St. Mary's of Gytside |

This Standing Stone is about 13 chains on the South Side of the River Eden opposite Edensbank but whether it is the remains of a druid's temple or set up to mark something relative to the battle Contested between the Romans & Caledonians according to Messrs. Miller & Small, it is difficult to determine it stands about 4 feet 10 inches high and its sides are about 2 feet broad
Page 43 Smalls Antiquities It is Stated in the description of Cairn North of it "This Cairn Stood a little north of an ancient Druids' Temple only one Stone now remaining out of ten of which it formerly Consisted."
Many of the inhabitants consider it to have been a druid's temple others disagree as to the origin of it the name Standing Stone has been written until decided by Capt [Captain] Bayly |

Supposed to be the other pit or place referred to by Mr Small.

The intrenchment referred to

the remains of an Ancient Fort, Called the
Roman Camp which Col [Colonel] Miller in his
essay Supposed to have been occupied
by the Roman Army previous to the great
battle fought in the plain below. The
Sides of this hill except on the N.E. [North East] where
it is Connected with the general range
of the Ochills are Steep and it rises
about 400 feet from the base, the
Summit is surrounded by a chain of
rocks upwards of 300 yds [yards] in Circumference
which forms a sort of natural Citadel and
is still called the Fort "
Smalls Antiquities pages 187. 188
"The popular tradition of the Country makes it a Roman Camp
at least it generally goes by that name
but it is by no means as Correct as if they
had called it a Roman Fort which
it obviously seems to have been" |

"In the camp at Pitlour which is Still called the
Roman Camp although very little of it remains.
The hill upon which it lies stands on the South side
and forms part of the Ochil range to which it
is joined on the N.E. [North East]. The Summit is
Surrounded by a chain of rocks upwards of 300
yards in Circumference which forms a sort of
Citadel and is still called the Fort"
Note: The terraces mentioned by Col [Colonel] Miller below the Summit facing the Lomond Hill are not now traceable I minutely examlned the ground but could not discover any trace of them J.H |

which has been originally
very steep, and is pretty much
So yet, though it has been obliged
to yield a good deal of to the all
Conquering plough, there was
till about 20 years ago a considerable
number of curious terraces, evidently
Artificially made along the side
of this hill which appeared to have
been once Occupied as encampments"

"An upper Stone of a querne, now preserved in the museum
of the Scottish Antiquaries, was discovered in 1825, along
with the remains of an Iron Sword, in digging on the
Summit of a hill Called the Camp, near Pitlour houses, Fifeshire.
The type in which the upper Stone is funnel Shaped, with radiating
grooves from the Centre perforation, is believed to be the portable
hand mill of the Roman Soldiers. It is engraved as such
in Stewarts Caledonia Romanae."
