016 | [Situation] In Gateside That a Romish Chapel was established here previous to the Reformation there is little doubt the tradition of the Neighbourhood still keeps alive the Name Mr William Gilmour an old gentleman who is upwards of fourscore years old pointed out the Site as shewn on trace from what he had heard his father and Grandfather say on the subject. The village of Gateside was formerly Styled or Called the Chapelton of the Virgin which is in favor of a chapel being erected here. An old Manuscript plan of Antiquities which I seen today a chapel was marked in Gateside and written St. Mary's of Gytside |
