016 | [Situation] ¾ Mile N.E. [North East] of Edentown Smalls Antiquities page 49 "When that large cairn which Stood in Westfield policies, a little to the right of the house was removed about 30 years ago a vast number of Urns full of ashes were found which the workmen called Cans and many of them finely Carved, some more coarsely than others. There was also a Stone Coffin* found a little South from the Cairns when digging a ditch for a Stripe of planting on the roadside, Containing a very large Skeleton at full length with uncommonly large teeth, but when it was exposed to the atmosphere or touched it Crumbled down into dust this I think had evidently been a person of distinction among the Romans as it as well as the Urns and other Stone Coffins were all in the vicinity of the Great Cairn" page 42 Archaelogia Scotica. At A. "close by Mr Cheap's house of Wellfield a large Cairn Stood until 26 years ago about 130 Yards in Circumference upon being removed it was found to contain Urns, bones Stone Coffins many remains of Arms completely Oxidised and a deers horn about 150 Yards SE [South East] from that agood many bones were dug up this Season 1828 and a Stone Coffin Containing a Skeleton four feet under the ground" |

Note * This Statement appears to be wrong there is an old man who resides in Cowiefauld aged about 74 years who found the Coffin Containing the Skeletons which he States were two in number his name is William Doo
Note: It appears that Col [Colonel] Miller and Doctor Small agree in a great measure about this Cairn So much so that in the absence of any other Authorities it might with safety be shewn on the Ordnance Plans. J. M
Note: I have been unable to Consult Mr Cheap of Wellfield who is on a bed of Sickness but he directed me to Mr Shepherd and Mr Doo as Qualified Persons
