"When that large cairn which Stood
in Westfield policies, a little to the
right of the house was removed about
30 years ago a vast number of Urns
full of ashes were found which the
workmen called Cans and many of
them finely Carved, some more
coarsely than others.
There was also a Stone
Coffin* found a little South from
the Cairns when digging a ditch
for a Stripe of planting on the
roadside, Containing a very
large Skeleton at full length with
uncommonly large teeth, but when
it was exposed to the atmosphere
or touched it Crumbled down into
dust this I think had evidently
been a person of distinction among
the Romans as it as well as the
Urns and other Stone Coffins were
all in the vicinity of the Great Cairn"

page 42 Archaelogia Scotica.

Note: probably exaggerated with the view of making them Roman J.H.
Note * This Statement appears to be wrong there is an old man who resides in Cowiefauld aged about 74 years who found the Coffin Containing the Skeletons which he States were two in number his name is William Doo

Note: It appears that Col [Colonel] Miller and Doctor Small agree in a great measure about this Cairn So much so that in the absence of any other Authorities it might with safety be shewn on the Ordnance Plans. J. M

Note: I have been unable to Consult Mr Cheap of Wellfield who is on a bed of Sickness but he directed me to Mr Shepherd and Mr Doo as Qualified Persons
