"The dead bodies of the Caledonians who fell in the last recontre Seem to have been burnt on an eminence about 400 yard to the Westward near the field of battle on one grand funeral pile with a great many Stones thrown upon the Spot, and several pretty large upright Stones Standing around it though several other had been undermined and fallen over. "The battle in the meantime Seems to have raged
with great fury along the Northern bank of the
river; for a little to the west of Wellfield at B
another Cairn Stood about 40 years ago. It was
not so large as the others; but from the care
with which it was Erected, some persons of note
were supposed to have been buried there. It was
Sunk in the ground, and rose about four or five
feet above it, and was Surmounted by a Druids
temple of Seven Stones, it was found to Contain
urns and bones"
Note: The name popularly given to these Stones were the Standing Stones and even to this day the place is called the Site of the Standing Stones. It may have been a druidical temple or not Col [Colonel] Miller it appears was the only person of that opinion
Note: Both authors Seem to agree as to these Standing Stones the Site was pointed out by Mr W. Gilmour and an intelligent tradesman who resides in Strathmiglo and who seems to have devoted Some of his spare hours to Antiquarian objects relating to this neighbourhood, his name is William
Were it not for this statement I would have adopted the designation Cairn, which it seems to have been with a few upright stones 20 feet beyond the base - which I have not infrequently seen in Yorkshire
