On my last I left the rocking stone of Dron, still holding South a quarter of an hour brought me to Lusty Law a place once famous far and wide for its Cattle Markets but now in the sear and yellow leaf. But its decay is not so surprising as its previous importance as a Tryst situated on the top of a hill among furze and rock a number of cottages were clustered here and dealers in Cattle and sheep gathered around them to do business now only two of the solitary group |

My way of life
Is fall’n into the sere, the yellow leaf;
And that which should accompany old age,
As honour, love, obedience, troops of friends,
I must not look to have; but in their stead
Curses, not loud but deep, mouth-honour, breath,
Which the poor heart would fain deny, and dare not.

It is said on what authority I know not that when Cromwell was marching his Ironsides on Perth the leader of a division named Lustus encamped his men here and hence Lusties Law, Lusty Law and Lousie Law.

This object is popularly known in this neighbourhood, it is on the summit of Lochelbank Hill, of a circular appearance and underneath its surface, stones of a small size such as are generally found in cairns are to be seen, at present the cairn is very slightly elevated above the surface of the hill.
About 20 years ago the present proprietor of Blairstruie accompanied the late Mr. Small to Cairn Geddes for the purpose of Excavating to discover the remains of some.. [cont] |

[Quotation]
The late Mr. Small in his Roman Antiquities endeavours to prove that a Roman Fort was on Lustielaw but it is evident that he has been describing Cairn Geddes as several respectable inhabitants still living were eye witnesses to his proceedings when he had the cairn opened for the purposes of discovery on the other hand he has has not been known to investigate in any way at or near the fair ground at Lustielaw hence, it is probable that he has named Lochelbank Hill Lustielaw through mistake or it may be that he considered the hills from Blairsturie S.W. [South West] to Berry Hill to be the Lustielaw but he was decidedly wrong - turn over... |

[Descriptive remarks] ..departed heroes said traditionally to have been interred here, and the result of the investigation was a rude stone coffin found about 6 feet below the surface containing some human bones etc. It is conjecture by some of the inhabitants that a Roman Fort was erected at or about Cairn Geddes, but up to the present the information viewed is not satisfactory on the subject. See the Late Mr. Smalls account.
Smalls Antiquities page 181
"This pass was also well guarded by two forts, which stood at the South end or steep long and narrow pass called the Wects or Wicks of Baigly. The one on the east side obviously points itself out to have been on that beautiful conical hill called Filday Law perhaps from Phildis which is evidently artificial. The other on the rising ground on the opposite or West side has not retained such a pretty name being styled Lousy Law but as a compensation for its name it retains the privilege of having an annual fair for bestial in the month of May, but this vulgar name is evidently a very gross corruption of its original one as it is usually spelled Lusty Law here we have most decidedly the vestige of the name of Agricolas successor Lallastius Lucullus in that of this fort which retains the two middle syllables, It is very natural to suppose that the general in chief would impose his own name upon it calling it Fort Lallustius. |

This name is applicable to a portion of the cart road which traverses Lochelbank Hill from East to West. the road at this place passes between rocks appearing by artificial, but more probably a natural occurrence the Craigs are about 630 links N.N.E. [North North East] of Cairn Geddes.
From the appearance of the rocks through which the road passes though slightly elevated above the road perhaps the origin of the name. |

Two cottage houses the property of the Rev. [Reverend] Alexander Burt on the east side of the Great North Road adjoining the River Farg.
These cottages have been occasionally styled Fordell Cottages on account of being on the estate or farm of Fordell and the proprietor in his return lately forwarded to the authorities styled them North Pendicle Glenfarg but recently he has considered the name now given the most appropriate as well as the other authorities supplied. |

Note: "The Cat Stones found in various parts of Scotland apparently deriving their name from the British Cad or the Celtic Cath, signifying a battle, and therefore marking the scene of some ancient conflict." In the parish of Kirkliston is the oft noted Cat Stane, on which the painful antiquary may yet decipher the imperfect and rudely lettered inscription - the work most probably of much younger hands than those that reared the mass of dark whinstone on which it is cut in (H)OC TVMVLO TACET VETTA..VICTR.. About 60 yards to the west of the Cat Stane a large tumulus formerly stood, which was opened in 1824, and found to contain several complete skeletons.
The raising of stones of memorial on the scenes of victory is a custom of many early nations, and one which has not even now entirely fallen into disuse. Sir, With reference to your remarks on the accompanying name sheet relating to the Cat Stane I beg to state that the object is not a stone of memorial nor is it a fallen Single stone, neither is it considered by the most intelligent persons in the neigbourhood to be an antiquity - it is simply a rock having a natural seat and had it not been for the circumstance referred to in the descriptive remarks would probably not be noticed or named.
