[Reverend] Mr. Fogo, Ph. [Parish] Minister St. Monance. Hist. [History] of Fife by J.M. Leighton page 115. 019 Parish of Carnbee. An old Castle, still entire but in a state of dilapidation it is a large stone building 5 stories high and apparently built at different intervals the oldest is of high but unknown antiquity and forms the western end of it. the Eastern part is of modern date of erection being built in 1573, this date with the initials MH being carved in a stone on the front of the third story. This modern addition is about 5 links long and of the same corresponding breadth. This Castle with the barony, which had previously been the property of a family named Olyphant, belonged in the reign of James VI [6th] to sir Thomas Erkine of Gogar, the brother of the Earl of Marr. he was afterwards Viscount Fenton & Earl of Kellie. In 1797 the castle and Estates went to the Erskines of Cambo, after which the castle appears to have been the seat of the family. It is described by "Sibbald" as a good old house and in 1791 in the Statistical Account it is said . the castle of Kellie where his lordship resides is a very large and strong building with stately apartments which the present Earl has fitted up in a most elegant manner, and laid out the pleasure grounds about the place with great taste,- These pleasure grounds have long ceased to exist as such being cleared up fenced and used as a farm. Kellie Castle was used as a farm house until lately when a new farm house was built near it. The windows are mostly all broken and the walls and roof is much time worn and breaking into scattered rents. On the death of Methven 10th Earl of Kellie, the Earl of Marr succeeded to the castle with a small portion of the lands adjoining it.
