Struthers was once the residence of the Lindsays, Earls of Crawford, it is of such great antiquity that the date of its erection is unknown, it was occupied by one of the Earls of Crawford about 60 years ago and then it was in a good state of repair; now there is nothing standing but the North East and South East gables; the former is about 12 feet thick, and the other about 5: on the S.W. [South West] side there is a small portion of an arched vault and a portion of the wall of the building. From the thickness of the walls and its general appearance it has been a place of strength.
Close to, there is a farm house, bearing the same name, it is a house two Stories high with offices and threshing machine all in good repair, there are gardens and a farm of about 336 acres of arable lands attached. Tenanted by James Walker. The whole is the property of the Earl of Glasgow. |

[Quotation] "There are also the ruins of Struthers or as it is called in some old papers Auchter-uther-Struther. This was formerly the seat of the Earls of Crawford, and it stands about two miles Southwest from the village of Ceres. Man has been less mercifull to this place than "time", and there now exists very scanty remains of the once splendid house and warlike towers and battlements. The park around the house which is enclosed by a stone all contains about 200 acres of ground. The venerable beeches of a very large size which are mentioned in the last Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account ] have died or been cut down." Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Co. [County] Fife 1845. |

This Castle once formed the principal residence of the family of Hope of Craighall. Sir Thomas Hope, Joint Lord Advocate of Scotland under Charles II lived here. The heads of the family in the Feudal Age exercised Authority over an extensive tract of Country round the Castle, and at the present time several feuars pay an equivalent in Cash for personal services peculiar to Chivalry. The present head of the family is Lord Superior of Ceres. Regarding the early history of the castle nothing is known in the Neighbourhood, and no date anterior to 1697 is to be found on the walls. It is evidently much older. The ground plan appears to have resembled the letter H , the principal entrance is in the east, by an Arched way, terminating in the west side. |

" King's Advocate (from whom the principal families in Scotland

[Craighall Castle (ruins of) continued.]
[Authorities] David Brown, Baron Baillie. Robert Bell, Craighall. William Wilson, Simonden. [situation] About 1¼ miles E.N.E. [East North East] from Cassindilly.
[remarks]....The whole of the under flat has been arched in the roof, in this flat are seen the remains of the oven, bricks forming which are to be found half burnt. The walls are between three and four feet thick, in them are seen tracings of staircases. Round the building were sixteen turrets only one of which is entire. Till about thirty years ago the building was entire to the tapestry on the walls, but a late factor demolished the north and greater part of north east sides for building purposes. In the South side a piece of Masonry has been built with 9 apertures, 7 of which have semicircular tops, one of these apparently a door. This addition extends the height of the Walls, and in it are placed the " Arms" presently used by the family with the words "Spero, Suspiro, donee" and the date 1697, regarding its use, architects can only form conjectures. Only one room is roofed and it is for the use of the Baron Bailie, in it are a few very fine geological specimens, a piece of the Mosaic jambs of the fire place of a room, as also pieces of the cornice in stucco. The ruins are shown to visitors. The present proprietor is George William Hope Esq. Craighall.
