This name applies to about half a dozen Cottages on the farm of Clatto, having small vegetable gardens attached. They are occupied by weavers and are the property of John Balfour Esq. Balbirnie.

017 [situation] About 2 miles E by S. [East by South] of the Village of Kettle.
A ruin immediately adjoining the farm Steading of Downfield which is said to be the remains of a Baronial [residence] of the family of Rigg. It is supposed to be one of the Cellars belonging to the old mansion and gets the name of "The Vault" on account of its being Arched. It is in a Very ruinous looking condition and seems to be fast going to decay.

[Note] "Enquiry has been made as to the antiquity of this object and the following answer has been received from Mr C.....tlo - " This object is ..... a ruin - it is a small plain unornamented stone building one story high, the ground floor being on the same level with the outside surrounding surface the walls are four feet thick arched all over with a strong stone roof it is used at present as a cattle shed and was never known to be used for any other purpose- there is no local tradition connected with it in the country nor is the date of its erection known. It has no indications of ever having formed part of a larger building - nor is it considered of any importance beyond that of a cattle shed."
