017 | [situation] In the Eastern portion of the Parish of Falkland This village is irregularly built, the several feuars erecting their houses according to their convenience. The greater part is feued from Mr Trotter of Ballenden, some of the feus being as low as one penny Scots, and some as high as 2/6 sterling, yearly. The houses generally belong to the occupiers, and fo the most part are two storeys high. The inhabitants are chiefly occupied in weaving, looms being set up in every house. There is neither Church nor school in the village, owing to its vicinity to Falkland, where there are both. There are no shops of any consequence; and only one public house. There are two breweries, one bakery and one distillery, which give employment to a number of men. South West of the village is a piece of ground called The Common, cut full of holes in which the villagers use to steep their lint, this common was much more extensive, but a former proprietor of the neighbouring estate of Lathrisk, bought the greater part of it. Although the proper name is the one given, that by which it is known by is "the Newton" |
