036 [Situation] About 40 Chains N.E. by E. [North East by East] of Stenhouse.
An irregular and high hill very Steep and partly covered with Furze on the South and West Sides. It is partly cultivated on the top and partly good pasture land with a few Scattered Furze.
The Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] Says "A little way to Northeast is the Hill of Orrock. On it is a big Spring, upon this hill and the farm of Babie Several barrows or tumuli are to be seen but too large to be easily removed. Some of them have, however, been dug up and discovered the bones of those Ancient warriors over whom they had been raised." Mr. Blackwood of Orrock told me that he drained the Vitriolic Spring 24 years ago, he also thinks that Tumuli mentioned as being on Orrock Hill contains no Sepulchral remains. he removed several of the supposed tumuli for the purposes of cultivation and found no remains, but he says there were Stone Coffins found in one in Babie and in a field on the farm of Orrock Several Coffins containing ashes turned up by the plough (both these places are on Plan 36D) M.K.
