036 [Situation] 15 chains West of Newton Lynn.
A remarkable feature in the Newton Braes 15 Chains of Newton Lynn, composed of a peculiar mass of rocks which have the appearance of having been piled up artificially, Although there is no doubt but they assumed their appearance from natural Causes. There are several legends existing respecting the origin of the name, one of which is that a deserter of the name of Melville or Meldrum as punishment for his Offence, was forced to leap from the top of the precipice at this place. Another & more probable one is that a person named Melville leaped his horse over the precipice at the Spot where the rocks are Situated while hunting.
