039 | [Situation] 7/8 mile South of ParKend A fine old baronial Mansion beautifully situated on the north side of a large lake and surrounded by lofty old wood, it appears to have been built in the sixteenth century a stone with Armorial bearings and bearing date 1558 is still to be seen in the wall on the west side of the building; it was originally the property of the Hendersons of Fordel but was purchased by an Ancestor of the present proprietor Lieut [Lieutenant] William Mowbray R.N [Royal Navy] of the ancient family of Mowbray of Cockairney whose residence it now is. |
