Torryburn P[aris]h
[Other Spelling] P[aris]h of Torryburn
[Authority] Full[arton's] Gazetteer, New Stat[istical] Acc[oun]t, Old Stat[istical] Acc[oun]t, Johnston's Map of Co[unty], Sheriff Co[unty] List of P[aris]hes, Map of Turnpike Roads.
[Situation] In the Western extremity of the Co[unty] upon the coast of the Firth of Forth.
[Descriptive Remarks] A parish in Fifeshire formed by the Union of the baronies of Torry and Crombie. Crombie appears to have consisted of the district of the present parish South of the burn of Torrie, and of certain detached lands distant about 7 or 8 miles, and now annexed quad Sacra to the parish of Saline. In lieu of these, the lands of Inzievar and Oakley, belonging quad cibilia to the parish of Saline, but cut off by the intervening parish of Carnock, have been annexed quad Sacra to Torryburn. This parish is bounded by the parishes of Culross and Carnock on the West and North, by Dunfermline on the East, and by the Firth of Forth on the South. Its soil is generally good, and well diversified with enclosed fields and plantations. In it are some Antiquities etc. |

The Ruins of the Parish Church of Crombie. There is no record of the time when crombie was first erected into a Parish, the earliest notice on the subject is in a list of Parishes said to have been drawn in the reign of King W[illia]m the Lion, quoted in a recent publication from Sibbald's His[tory] of Fife. Crombie appears to have been dependant on the Abbey of Culross. In the "Book of the Universalle Kirk of Scotland" Torrie and Crombie are noticed as separate Parishes in year 1581 and 1586, and it is thought that the Union was effected towards the close of the same Century. The Church is surrounded by a Grave Yard, still in use, and being on an elevated position, it commands a fine View of the Firth of Forth and opposite Coast. |

"One of the first notices in the session convened at the Kirk of Crombie, appointed ane stent for repairing the Kirk of Crombie, extending to 30lb, to be paid by parishioners. But there is nothing in the record to enable us to ascertain whether that Church was then or afterwards used for public worship:. New Stat[istical] Acc[oun]t of Fife. Also in the same Stat[istical] Acc[oun]t it is noticed on page 859 that this Church "the patronage of which belonged to the Monastery of Dunfermline", and King Malcolm IV was a Donor in 1158-1163. |

"In a pretty otherwise plain field N[orth] E[ast] of the Village of Torryburn there is a flat stone raised upon one end of a shape nearly oblong, and measuring from the Surface to the top about 8 feet and about 4 ½ in breadth. Round the edge of it there is a deep circle, and on each of its sides a number of rises, all of which wear the appearance of art and antiquity. At about 18 or 20 paces from this stone, there is a number of smaller ones, which from their present position, seem to have former part of a circle. This place is thought to have been the scene of a battle in some former period, and these stones to mark the graves of some of the chiefs, who had fallen in the engagement. And the supposition is rendered highly probable by the name which it still bears, Tollzies, which is evidently a corruption of the Scotch word Tulzie, which signifies a fight". Map of Torry estate |
Boundary the S[outh] side of the parish Torryburn |
An estuary extending from the Bass rock in the German Ocean to near the town of Sterling and dividing the counties of Haddington, Edinburgh and Linlithgow from that of Fife. It receives many considerable and inconsiderable tributaries and embosoms the fortified islet of Inchgarvie, Cramond Isle andInchcolm with its attendant islets, Haystack Carcraig, etc. The Firth here is about 5 miles, and about 6 or 7 miles farther on, it has the island of InchKeith stretching nearly a mile across the Channel. On the north side upon the beach, are the villages of Burtnisland, Pettycur and Kinghorn, the towns of Kirkcaldy and the villages of Pathhead, Dysart and Wemyss, etc. On the south side are the villages of Granton and Newhaven, the towns of Leith, Portobello and Musselburgh, etc. At Leith it is about 6 miles broad, and at the Bass rock where it fairly becomes lost in the ocean, it is about 11 miles in breadth. It is of great importance to navigation & commerce, above Queensferry it is in every part one of the safest roadsteads in Britain. Inverkeithing bay, Burntisland roads, Leith roads and various other localities are places of safe anchorage. On the south side the harbours are Grangemouth, Granton, Leith, Fisherrow, and Dunbar, Granton being the best, and Leith most frequented and the only one of much commercial importance. Abridged from Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland. |

Syme is the only one in Carnock who protends

March 23d 1854
Having called on Mr Deas, when attending to the Remarks of Plan 34D, for information Respecting the Remark made on Pitfirrane Dean, I was informed that the original and most correct Orthography for the mname of his house is "Lundin" instead of the name 'London' which I had before from him. I have consulted others on the subject who say Lundin is the proper name. I have altered it on trace 5. Mr Alex[ande]r Watt, Rent Rect[o[r H. Deas and John Proudfoot are authorities.

This district now comprises the greater part of the Annfield-Blair & Inzievar Estates which have all been purchased by the Company. |
