OS1/13/125/3 WEMYSS New Stat Acct Full. Gazetteer Old Stat. Acct., Oliver + Boyds Almanac Johnstons Co. Map 024; 025; 032 A parish in Fifeshire, on the shore of the Firth of Forth. Its extreme length from South-west to North east is about 5 3/4 miles; while its breadth varies from 1 to 2 miles. The beach is bold and rocky; beyond this surface of the parish rises towards the north, and is in some places considerably elevated. It has a beautiful appearance particularly in the neighbourhood of Wemyss Castle, which is surrounded with extensive pleasure grounds + On the South the parish is bounded by the Firth of Forth On the E.(east) by Markinch and Scoonie on the North by Kennoway and Markinch, And on the West by Dysart. This parish has 4 villages namely East Wemyss, Buckhaven Coaltown West Wemyss + see their respective descriptions in the adjoining pages A very small detached portion of Markinch is at the N.E. end of ('it' is crossed out) this Parish. No portion of (Wemyss) is detached in any other parish.

OS1/13/125/5 STANDING STONE [Earl's Seat] Standing Stane Mr. Elder Farmer Earl Seat Mr. T. Bywater Mr. J. Bywater Old Stat. Acct. 032 An oblong stone standing perpendicular 4 feet out of the ground supposed to have been erected by the Danes or Druids. Situate (in a field a little S.E. of Earls Seat) on the Turnpike Road. A stone, on the turnpike road, about one third of a mile after entering the parish from the east, it has stood time immemorial; is 4 feet in height above ground,and 3 feet in diameter, by some called the standing stone, by others the halfway stone between Kirkcaldy and Kennoway. For what reason it was placed there, the writer could never learn any thing satisfactory. Old Stat. Acct.

Acct. 032 A large cave adjoining the shore at E. end of East Wemyss. Tradition says Baronial Courts were held herein also James 4. took shelter in it with a -- of gipsies. Tradition says that the fishermen to Tan their sails in this cave hence Bark cave. The cave nearest to the sea shore is called the Court Cave, two reasons are assigned for the name. One is that when the lands of Easter Wemyss were the property of the Colvills, they here held their baron-court; another that King James IV. in a frolick once joined a company of gypsies, who were here making merry, and when the liquor began to operate, the gypsies as usual with people of their charactor, began to quarral among themselves; upon this his majesty started to mediate between the parties, but they, ignorant of the rank of their new associate were about to handle him pretty roughly for his goodness which obliged the king to discover himself; in allusion to this affair, the cave was afterwards ironically called the Court Cave. OS1/13/125/13 MACDUFF'S CASTLE (In Ruins) Macduffs Castle Estate Maps New Statistical Accounts of Scotland 1853 T. Bywater Esq. John Bywater Esq. Mr. Johnson Manufacturer Mr John Robertson 032 A very fine old Norman Castle in Ruins once the residence of the Macduffs. Situate about 20 chains N.E. of East Wemyss, said to have been built by Macduff 1st. Earl of Fife in the year 1057. Under the Article Castles, May be ranked the ruins of the Castle of Easter Wemyss, usually called Macduff's Castle,and said to have been built by Macduff, who was created earl of Fife about 1057, and on whom King Malcolm Canmore conferred many very un-common privileges. Two square towers and a considerable part of a wall that has surrounded the Castle still remains. Old stat. Acct. Macduff's Castle situated a little to the East of east Wemyss. It is said to have been built by Macduff who was created Earl of Fife about the year 1057, and on whom King malc. bestowed some peculiar marks of regard. It is built on an eminence near the sea shore having a very commanding view; and there are few strangers who come to this part of the country, without paying a visit to the Old Castle. New Stat Acct.
OS1/13/125/14 JONATHAN'S CAVE Well Cave Estate maps T. Bywater Esqre. Mr. Robertson Old Stat. Acct. James Bain 032 A large double cave immediately under Macduffs Castle. When Castle was tenanted there stor near the shore the Gardener's -- occupied by Jonathan Forman one night the sea washed the down compelling Jonathan to [find] other shelters which led him to cave hence Jonathans Cave. The reason it sometimes is called Well Cave is that there is a [small] spring in the centre of the inner. There are two caves at the bottom of the clliff amd immediately under the ruins of the Castle of Easter Wemyss, one of these is called Jonathans Cave, from a man who with his family resided some time in it. The entrance to the other is very narrow, but after having got through it, you find yourself in a very spacious place in which is a well of excellent water. It is annually visited by young people in Wemyss, with lights from the first Monday of January --but from--this custom took its --------- Old Stat Acct.

Each pays from 2/- [2 shillings] to 6/6 [6 shillings and sixpence] per quarter according to age + advancement.

Boats can make the harbour almost any time of tide and in any weather except it be at low water of the "great stream tides" in March + Septr.[september] The cost was £12000. Bywater Esqre. 032 3 Towers a little distance apart from each other, along the wall by the seashore, near West Wemyss apparently been built on the boundary of some monastry as there is the ruins of a Popish chapel in the garden, N. of the centre Tower. There is no tradition concerning these towers. Mr. Bywater thinks it probably that they formed part of an old monastery.

Wemyss which many years ago was let to a company to manufacture glass in it. This cave which is about 200 ft in length 100 in breadth, and 30 in height was fitted up 70 years ago by a tacksman for a Glass work, but soon after the work commenced, the man became bankrupt and the buildings were allowed to go to ruins. Fullertons Gazetteer Directory to Gentlemens Seats 032 A very plain Old Castle, built upon a rock perpendicular to the shore of the Firth of Forth about 40 ft. above the level of the sea. Celebrated as the place where Queen Mary had her first interview with Darnley. Charles II visited here in the years 1650 & 1657, is now the seat of Erskine Wemyss Esqre. The castle of Wemyss, situated a little to the East of the burgh of Wester Wemyss and close by the shore, on a cliff between 30 and 40 feet above the level of the sea, is a large and magnificient building. When it was built is uncertain, but part of the east wing is said to be nearif not as old as the Castle of Easter Wemyss, usually called Macduff's Castle. It received considerable additions about the beginning of the 17th. century, from the Right Hon. David Earl of Wemyss. It was in this Castle that Lord Darnly had his first interview with Queen Mary, 13th. February 1565. The Queen was at this tour of visits in Fife, which, says the famous John Knox caused wild fowl to be so dear, that partridges were sold at a Crown the piece, Old Stat. Acct.
