A large & handsome stone building erected (in 1843) & supported by the Burgh Funds. Cost of erection £2500. Average number of scholars 250. The branches taught are a general English education. Latin. Greek. French, & Mathematics. The Master receives £80 per annum from the Burgh funds, besides fees from the scholars. There are two assistants who are paid by the Master.

A private girls school established & supported by Miss Fergus, daughter of John Fergus Esqr. M.P. [Member of Parliament] for the Co. [County] of Fife. The scholars are taught Reading, Writing, Sewing & Knitting & pay 1/6 per Qr. [One shilling and sixpence per Quarter Year] for Books etc.

A building situate on the west side of Thistle street, rented by the schoolmaster from the trustees of Robert Philp Esqr.
Previous to the erection of the new school now called the Philp's School, this building was used for the education of the scholars under Philp's Trust. The number of scholars attending the school is 21. A general English Education taught.
