[Quotation]
"The old Church on the site of which the present Church is built Its age is not exactly known. It is said to have been dedicated to St. Bryse; who in the days of superstition appears to have been the titular saint of the place * and who has entailed his name on a small division of the burgh and which is called in the Register of Sasines St. Brise or St. Bryce's Deal. *
The arms of the burgh appear to have been framed in compliment to the Saint. These are a Gate of a Church, with the Saint Standing in it, having a mitre on his head something resembling a cross in his hand, a Moon & Star as emblems of night round him; and the motto under Vigilando Munio" Old Stat.
