[County] of Fife. A small parish in the county of Fife, bounded on the southeast by the Frith of Forth, on the northeast by the parish of Dysart, on the northwest by Dysart and Auchterderran, and on the southwest by the parish of Abbotshall. It is of an oblong shape about 2 miles in length from north to south, and scarcely in any place more than three fourths of a mile in breadth from east to west. On its coast is the Royal Burgh of Kirkcaldy for which see descriptive remarks in an adjoining page. Two small detached portions of the parish of Abbotshall is situated within this parish, but no part of Kirkcaldy is situated within any other parish.

[Statistical Account] Oliver & Boyd's Almanac Johnston's Co. [County] Map 037 [situation] On the N. [North] coast of the Firth of Forth. A sea port and Royal Burgh, situated on the coast of the Firth of Forth, in the parish of Kirkcaldy. The first notice taken of the burgh is in 1334 when it was mortified by David II [Second] to the monastery of Dunfermline with who it continued till 1450, when the commendator and convent conveyed to the bailies and community, the burgh and harbour, the small customs, the right to hold courts etc. previous to this it had only been a burgh of barony, holding of the Abbot & Monastery but it was immediately thereafter erected into a Royal Burgh, with all the customary privileges. It is market town of an extensive district, retail dealers in the surrounding towns and villages are supplied with good by Kirkcaldy Merchants. A corn market is held every Saturday. The town council erected a Stock market, and opened it for business in 1827. Few places in Scotland have a better flesh market, besides furnishing and neigbourhood, with a regular supply of superior butcher meat, the fleshers have been in the practice for some years of sending large quantities of meat of all descriptions, to the London and Glasgow Markets. The manufactures consist almost exclusively in weaving coarse linen ad cotton goods, chiefly ticks, dowlas, checks and sailcloth. There are some Bleachfields, a Rope work, and two extensive Iron Foundries, and machine works etc. The town has five branches of Banking Companies, viz. of the Bank of Scotland, the National Bank of Scotland, the Commercial Bank of Scotland, the Glasgow & Ship Bank and the National Security Savings Bank of Scotland. OS1/13/105/6 6 [No Header] Kirkcaldy continued ..and a small weekly newspaper is published [on] Saturday. The burgh is governed by a Provost, two bailies, a dean of Guild, a treasurer, 16 other councillors and a town Clerk. The principal street is so far as it is within the burgh, is about one mile in length, yet it stretches in the same irregular manner into the neighbouring parishes of Abbotshall on the [West] and of Dysart on the east, and from its extreme length when [taken] altogether has obtained for Kirkcaldy its well known appellation of the "Lang Town". The harbour is situated near the east end of the burgh, it is large and has good stone piers, but has [the] disadvantages of being dry at low water. It enjoys a [considerable] coasting trade, and also a trade with the continent and the Baltic.

One third of the elected [commissioners] retire annually, & their places are filled up by others, Previous to establishment of the Harbour Commission the whole management was vested in the magistrates, & Town Council of the Burgh, & all the dues received went to the [obscured] burgh fund, but now with the exception of £ [obscured] paid annually to the magistrates & Town Council all the sums received are devoted to the liquidation of the debt incurred in making the harbour & in improving & maintaining the works of the harbour. A new pier is about to be erected from the [end] of East Quay to the NE [Northeast] end of Port Brae, tenders for the erection of which are to be deposited by first week in March 1854.
