[Situation] In the Co. [County] of Fife.
A parish in Fifeshire, bounded on the East by the parishes of Markinch and Wemyss, on the west by Kirkcaldy and part of Auchterderran, on the North by Kinglassie, and on the South by the Firth of Forth. It is of an irregular form, nearly 4 miles in length from North to South, and varying from 1 1/4 to 2 1/4 miles in breadth from East to west, containing about 3054 acres, the whole of which are arable, with the exception of about 400 acres which are under wood. This parish contains besides the Royal Burgh of Dysart 3 villages, viz. "Pathhead", "Gallatown" and Boreland". also some antiquities &c. &c. |

A plain substantial edifice erected 1849 partly by a grant from Governt [Government] & partly by subscription of the inhabitants of Pathhead and Sinclairtown. The ground on which it stands is fued from J T Oswald Esq of Dunnikier.
The average number of scholars is 170 who are taught a general English education. Latin. French & Drawing are also taught. The masters income is derived from the scholars fees & an allowance from Governt. [Government] of £5 per annum each for the instruction of 4 Pupil Teachers by whom he is assisted. The Pupil Teachers receive an allowance from Government of £10 each for 1st year £12.10 Second £15 Third £17.10 Fourth & £20 for the Fifth. The school is under the management of a Committee of 10 person of which James Bogie Esq. is Chairman. |

[situation] Betwixt the towns of Kirkcaldy and Dysart.

"Pathhead is in the Western extremity of the Ph. [Parish] (Dysart) at the head of a steep descent leading to Kirkcaldy called the Path & from thence it derives its name. It is divided into Pathhead proper or Dunnikier, & Sinclairton. The former or old town which is of very ancient date, is built on the estate of Dunnikier. The latter or New Town is built on the estate of the Earl of Rosslyn."

"Path-head a quoad sacra parish & a considerable town in the western extremity of the parish of Dysart, & is divided into two districts, Dunnikier, the superior of which is Oswald of Dunnikier, & Siclairtown, belonging to the Earl of Rosslyn."
The above appears to apply to the division for Ecclesiastical purposes, the name Pathhead is generally understood by the inhabitants to apply to that portion of the estate of Dunnikier which is built on, & to extend eastward along the coast from the Path, to a thoroughfare called New Road, on the W [West] side of Ravenscraig Castle, & Northward nearly in a straight line from New Road to the west side of Broad Wynd, & from thence to a [point] 7 chains WSW [West South West] along railway from the Booking office of the sinclairtown station. The locality is bounded on the west by East Burn. All [the] proprietors in Pathhead are feuars of G.G. Oswald Esqr. of Dunnikier. |

[Reverend] Ralph Erskine in 1763, when the minister with the majority of the congregation two years ago joined the Free Church party, they kept possession of the building & it is now likely to become a subject for litigation whether the building belongs to the party at present in possession, or to the minority of the original congregation, who did not join the Free Church. The building contains sittings for 750 persons. the average congregation is 330. The ministers stipend is £100 per annum with an allowance of £10 for a house. |

An old house in very good repair erected [in] 1692 by Mr. John Watson who at that time was the owner of the Dunnikier Estate. " To the east of Kirkcaldie upon a rising ground is the house & village of Dinniekier" Sibbald's Hist. [History] p [obscured]
In the New Statl. Acct. [Statistical Account] it is stated that "the house was long inhabited by the family of Dunnikier" p 139.
A new house now called Dunnikier house at some distance from the old one, was erected by James Townsend Oswald Esqr. which is now the residence of the proprietor of the Dunnikier Estate. |

An endowed School built & supported by the income derived from property left by Robert Philp of Edenshead, by will dated 15th May 1820, in which after enumerating some few legacies he directed that 3/8 of the income of the whole residue of his means & estate should be devoted to the Education & Clothing of 150 poor children (Boys & Girls) in the districts of Dunnikier, St. Clairtown & Hawklymuir. From the increase in value of the property the number of children is now augmented to 300. The scholars are taught a general course of English education, & are furnished from the fund with books, Paper etc. The masters salary is £150 per annum. Masters assistant £80 per annum. Mistress £40 per annum & a Female Assistant £25 per annum. |

"Below the town on a precipice almost surrounded by the sea stands the old Castle of Ravenscraig once the seat of the ancient family of St. Clair but now in ruins" Gazetteer p 490
"About half a mile to the westward of Dysart is the Castle of Ravenscraig. It stands on a steep craig fronting the sea. It with the adjoining lands was given by James 3rd to William Sinclair, Earl of Orkney, when he resigned the title of Orkney. "Although in a Ruinous state now, it was inhabited in Oliver Cromwells time" New Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] page 133. |

[Quotation] "The Castle of Ravenscraig is situated on a rock, projecting into the sea, at the east end of Pathhead. It was given by James III [Third] to William St. Clair Earl of Orkney. It has been ever since possessed by the family of St. Clair. It was inhabited in Oliver Cromwell's time, and was fired upon by a party of his troops.
