Traces 7,9 & 10. Are you sure that
the Stream running out of Loch Gelly,
is from its Source to its influx with
the Water of Ore called The Den Burn.
I am of the opinion that it is called
Gelly Burn, and that the Streamlet
branching from it at the Carden Den
and having its influx with the Ore
nearly at the same place is
only Called The Den Burn.
What you call the Den Burn
is identified upon Plan 31D as the
"Gelly Burn" and is well authenticated
in Name Book. D.H.

"Yes, I have the name from the
most intelligent in this locality.
But at the same time they told me
that portions of it went under the
names of Powguild and Shawsmill,
but it was nonsense to give it more than
one name. Consequently they would
recommend one name, and the most
popular is The Den Burn."

"I am sure this is called Gelly Burn
for I have been told So by persons living
on its margin for 40 years."

"I was aware of this therefore I made
particular enquiry So if possible to
agree, I have been living in this locality
and had a better opportunity to make
myself better acquainted with the name,
and I could only get one indifferent authority to call it Gelly Burn".
