A large expanse of water beautifully diversified with islands. The most considerable are St Serfs and the Castle island, the former remarkable for containing a religious-house and the latter of having been the prison of Mary Queen of Scots and the Earl of Northern Ireland. In this Loch are to be found all the different species of hill, burn or river trout, yet all these different kinds after being two years in the Loch and arriving at three quarters of a pound are red in the flesh as all the trout of every kind in the loch are. Loch leven is fed by the Gairney, South and North Queich and a rivulet from the Lomonds. The only outlet |

[Loch Leven - Continued] --it has, is by the River Leven -- which flows eastwards from the east end of the Loch. The Course of this river was changed some years ago by means of a new cutting which much resembles a Canal, at the same time the Loch was turned into a Mill Dam for Mills along the banks of the Leven, sluices having been erected to allow water out at pleasure. The River Leven is a considerable size flowing smoothly to its confluence with the Firth of Forth it receives the Lochty and Ore Waters on its course. |

A pretty good old mansion belonging to the Kirkness estate, it is finely situated on a rising eminence, surrounded with old trees and larhe plantations the latter encloses a small ornamental Park (which has no name). In the north side of this house are to be seen the remains of the stocks, which the proprietor had the power over. There is a vague tradition in the locality that the Culdees had a hospice here -- if they had no vestige of it now remains, even its site cannot be ascertained -- proprietor Marquis of Northampton. |

Close to the northern margin of the Water of Ore, on a small Knoll near the eastern corner of a flat piece of land until about seventy years ago a loch, are standing the ruins of Lochore Castle surrounded by a strong wall with port-holes at present much dilapidated. Fullarton in his Gazetteer says "there was until lately a considerable loch in this parish (Ballingry) called Loch Ore, from which a small stream Ore issues, but it has been in great part drained" (now wholly drained). Towards the eastern extremity of this loch was a small island upin which stood the remains of an ancient Castle supposed to have been founded in the reign of Malcolm III. The family of Loch Orr was of [continued] |

A pretty large hill on the farms of North and South Pitkenny and Inchgall Mill. There is a tradition in this locality that the Romans fought a battle here but the exact spot where it happened cannot be ascertained. Some supposed it was at the remains of a cairn which is on the south side of the hill. There is only about one half of this cairn now to be seen the rest was taken away for building dykes. Mr Russel says he found several human bones spears etc when carting away the stones. In order to preserve the rest of the Cairn it was planted |

The following remarks are relative to the "Hare Stanes" "Heaer Cairns" "Herlaw or Harelaw". Extracted from The Archaeology and Prehistoric Annals of Scotland page 92,3.
"Mr William Hamper, an ingenious English antiquary, has elaborately elucidated the derivation of the name as applied in England, and the use of the Hoar stones, the Menhars, or bound stones, as Stones of memorial, like, the stone Bohan, the son of Reuben, and other ancient land marks of Bible Story. Probably we shall justly esteem the "Hare Stane" as the memorial of the Western boundary of the ancient chase, claimed from time immemorial by the neighbouring capital; but if so, its name has long survived all popular recollection of the meaning which it bore. The same term Hare Stanes, is applied to a circular group of stones near Kirkdean, in the parish of Kirkurd, Peebleshire. It would appear, however, to have been more frequently used in Scotland in the most sacred sense of a memorial, if we judge from the examples of its application as the designation of Cairns, some of which, at least, and probably all, are sepulchral monuments. Among these are the Haer Cairns in the parish of Chinee; the Haer Cairns of Blairgowrie and Kinloch, Perthshire; the Hier Cairns of Monikie Forfarshire; The Herlaw, a gigantic Cairn in the parish of East Kilbride, Lanarkshire; the more celebrated Harlaw of Aberdeenshire; and the Harelaw at Lochore in Fifeshire." |
