An ancient cross in the village of Ormiston. Its height from the ground is about 15 feet. "There is an old cross in the centre of the village. It seems to have been connected with a Roman Catholic chapel, which about the beginning of the last century, stood where the cross now is, extending across the street from N. W. [North West] to S.E. [South East] That chapel was then used as a school house and one of the oldest inhabitants, now dead told me he was educated there." See Stat Acct [Statistical Account] 1841. |

A grave yard had been attached to it from which several human bones have been found, but is now planted with woods. "The Old Church was more centrical. It was situated close by the house of Ormiston Hall to the West, and it and the Church yard were both within the orchard of the proprietor. and as Mr. Sinclair states in the account given into the Presbytery in 1649 the inhabitants had no other way of getting into the churchyard than by the Laird's garden Door. The churchyard als was represented as too small for the parish. The aisle attached to it is still standing in pretty good preservation." Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Co. This is a small portion of the old parish church of Ormiston, said to be only the Vestry or Sacristy which was attached to the church, and has been used as a burying place by the Cockburn family when Lairds of Ormiston. The church was used as a place of worship till 1690, in which year another was erected at Westbyres, and the old one allowed to become a ruin. The principal part of the old edifice was pulled down about 1730 by the then proprietor and trees planted on its site. In the part of the church which is still standing, there is fixed in the wall a marble monument of great antiquity with a Latin inscription written on it of which the following is something near a translation - A long life which indulges all advantages to men - early youth bestowed these upon the Alexander - with a descent and personal appearance worthy of noble blood. It gave a quick genius and ingenious mind - Virtue cultivated thy soul; the muses their genius with equal success, zeal and prudence. These being their guides, Britannia was first traversed, then Gaul, where it opens to the warlike Helvitiany - you learned their the languages which Rome, Sion and Athens speak; which learned Gaul speak with the German. Altho the fates bore thy in early youth, you died snatched off not in immature death - He who has died having performed all the duties of life, it is not proper that he complain of the Shortness of life - Here is buried Alexander Cockburn first born of John Laird of Ormiston, and of Alison Sandilands of the illustrious family of Calder, who was born 13 January 1535, after an illustrious proficiency of languages, died in the year of his age 20, Calen September |
