A large mansion house on the west side of Thorter Burn. Some centuries ago it was a nunnery belonging to the Priory of Haddington, but now [modernised] and still exhibits evident mar [marks] of great antiquity. It is the property and residence of Mr. Hay.

"The Church of Garvald with its pertinents and a carucate of land convenient were granted to the Cistertian
"nuns which the Countess Ada Settled near Haddington during the reign of Malcolm IV . They established a grange near the
" church & formed a village which thus obtained the name of Nunraw They also acquired the lands of Slade and Snowdown forming together
