A large and handsome mansion pleasantly situated on the sides of a gentle sloping hill, and surrounded with a large demesne well wooded with full grown wood and ornamental parks, gardens, orchards &c. The wood appears many hundreds of years old. A square tower forming the west wing of the mansion is very ancient, having been built by the Giffords, and is beleived not to be surpassed in strength or height by any fortalice in the Kingdom. This tower was anciently called Lethington and was long the residence of the Lauderdale family. John Duke of Lauderdale was born and spent most of his days here. The change of the name was made by Alexander Lord Blantyre in honour of, & gratitude to his relation, Frances Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, who by a large bequest enabled him to purchase it. It is the property of Lord Blantyre. |

"The illustrious family of Maitland was for many ages seated at Leithington in this parish where the
"famous Duke of Lauderdale was born in 1616 Several of that family are intered in Haddington Church
"particularly John Maitland Baron of Thirlstane Lord High Chancellor of Scotland whose monument is
"graced with an epitaph Composed by his Royal Master James VI." Sinclair's Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] vol [volume] 6 p [page] 542
"Lennoxlove anciently Lethington about a mile to the South of Haddington the seat of Lord Blantyre. Part
